Looks like a great headline, but the story is a little less exciting.

and I totally agree. I hate cities , unless I 'have' to go to Bunnings, BCF etc or get some Sushi that isn't going to give me food poisoning.
This is why I like Airlie Beach. population below 5000, we have our own Bunnings, BCF, Auto Pro/SuperC**pAuto, Big W, decent restaurants (inc sushi & Moroccan), pretty much anything that you can need you can get here. Oh, and a movie cinema on the way.

The tourism council here used to advertise that you could get from Brisbane to Airlie without a single set of traffic lights, until Main Roads stuck in two sets on the main drag into Airlie a few years back, sparking the biggest protests and street marches here since McDonalds wanted to erect a huge M in the main street. Didn't work this time though, and we have now joined the rat race

the man was a known drunk, always found a place to sleep it off, locals knew better to leave him alone till he woke, this time he did not wake. It's that simple, I have the inside word on that, Bob
I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

I took the call for this case, and to be fair, the traffic island is vegetated with meter high bushes, and it has been pouring with rain up here the past week. Not many pedestrians out and about. In fact the area there is not much pedestrian traffic about, as it is a major road into Cairns. Hard to see someone under the bushes while traveling at 60kph, in the pouring rain. it is a great place to live, and who here has not passed someone sleeping it off under a tree, or bushes???
    Cheers,
    Ken

Population was only 3000 about 10 years ago. Most of that population growth is already migrating Mexicans. We blame them for needing the traffic lights.

It had already gone to the dogs then - my brother anchored off Airlie Beach in 1971 - there was only one building in sight. I was there in 1987 and considered it a development disaster then, even worse when I was there in 1997.

It'll be interesting watching how the newer developments up on the hill go over time. They're built on land that used to regularly turn into land slips in big wet seasons

In Ravenshoe & surrounds we have some shocking drivers but it sort of doesn't matter. There is not much traffic so if I'm following the old dear in the Echo into town at 40kph while she crosses the double whites on every bend & brakes to almost a stop on the sharper bends (still manages to cross the lines) I don't get stressed, it takes a few minutes longer to get there, no biggie.
I will also admit that some of the roads around here are, to put it mildly, fairly dangerous. When we first moved here from the wide open, flat plans of the Gulf Country I found having to drive around bends with mountains took a bit of practice. SWMBO just refused to drive anywhere except to town for about 6 months.
We live out of town but near enough to the Kennedy Highway to regularly hear the sirens of emergency vehicles racing down it, so I guess there must be a few accidents around here.
My gripe with Cairns is mainly the lack of consideration, what to me seems dangerous driving & it's just plain difficult to get around.
Speaking of Airlie Beach, I grew up in the 60's in Proserpine, my memory of Airlie was a few fishing shacks, 1 motel, 1 servo & 1 general store, must have changed a bit.
