From a consumer point of view, I can't help but feel that there are honestly sharks out there. A mob in Melbourne would not sell me a transfer case shift motor with out the associated ecu - I ended up buying one from a RETAIL business for 1/4 of the price. In another case there was a $495 difference between two retail business. And the expensive business couldn't even gaurentee colour. ... and that's after buying my 93 vouge from them!

I work in retail management, so I know the realities. But there are numerous businesses in Australia that I won't recommend anymore.

Comparing OZ pricing with overseas pricing is just plain wrong. There are huge differences in many areas as to why the price is different. IF you are unhappy with a price, then shop around for goodness sake, and stop this silly comparison war. It's just the way it is, business is business, markets are markets. I suggest that if any of you were to try and exist in this economic 'sphere' as a sole trader or business owner then you would pretty quickly change your tune.

I remember a while ago there were two threads active in General Chat, one of similar to this, and the other was complaining that someone's kid was having trouble finding a place that would take them on as an apprentice.

There are two ways to have low prices and stay in business. First is to have a sustainable profit per item, and the second is to have a sustainable profit per lot of items. The UK suppliers would shift much larger amounts of stuff so can add much less profit per item.

The joy of a market is that you can decide. But if you send all your money somewhere far away, keep in mind that that money is no longer in the same economy that your children will be in.

My two bobs worth, I try to do most basic maintenance on my D2 myself. I source parts , usually OEM, never aftermarket. I recognise there are some jobs I don't have the capability or workshop capacity to do myself. When the Aussie dollar was up, about 95 c to the dollar, ,I thought ahead and bought from England a heap of basic service parts, enough for about 3 years of servicing. I make sure I put my vehicle into our local LR independent dealer for jobs I can't handle, Consequently, I have spent a good deal of money there. Had to save up, go without, a product of my depression era parents. And, also consequently, I have a very good relationship with same workshop. I even get a discount! If we want Australian businesses to survive we must frequent them, form a relationship, I know there are a few shonkies out there, but a good balance of do what you can, and find a good workshop for the rest, is a win, win, Bob
I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

Bob, i have lots of customers like you, they are a delight as they realise that to stay in business, you have to have a profit margin and a good work ethic. they are fully aware that if i were to relax these terms i wouldn't be here to provide them with a service. i have formed many friendships and long term working relationships through mutual understanding. i realise they aren't flush and they realise what it takes to stay in business. funnily enough i would miss these guys the most when it comes time to move on.

Moral of the story is shop around, someone will be more than happy to help you.

second APT FAB there are still some good guys out there, real easy business to deal with, diff guard and steering guard worked out much cheaper, with postage from brissy to perth than most competitors products an IMO a much better quality product than most

As a general rule, I prefer to use local businesses, but a couple of examples. Just before Christmas, I needed to get a couple of new tyres. Local dealers were 30% higher than the Melbourne price - so, seeing my Melbourne son was coming up for Christmas ........

A couple of years ago I got a quote from a local company to rebuild the rear prop shaft on the 110. Not surprisingly perhaps, I was able to get a new, genuine, propshaft delivered from Melbourne for less. But the bit that really got me was that the actual cost for delivery of a complete shaft from Melbourne to the local village was about a third of the price quoted to deliver two U-joints and a slip joint from Sydney to Dubbo.
