Ah, yes. But ever since Adam man has known that something worth loving deserves lots of personal attention, Bob

What is even stranger than the Land Rover hate issued by non users, as described here in this thread, is the inter Land Rover community hate that often springs within and between local clubs, when, invariably, one group decides the other is some form of threat......and I can only presume that is the rationale.
I've seen it here, I've seen it in other states, and I've seen it between other clubs that have other focuses (eg. Truck clubs etc)....these situations are totally kooky, because in fact, the collective aims of all involved should be very much aligned. :(
My young bloke was also not that much of a Landrover fan - preferred his Landcruiser (work vehicle) - UNTIL the day that one of his mates bogged a Mazda on a mud flat just out of Kalgoorlie when they were all out motor bike riding.
He reversed his cruiser out on the mud flat to pull the Mazda out - and it also sank into the slops. They then called the parents of the Mazda owners, who turned up with a Cruiser Wagon AND a Patrol wagon. Once these people saw how badly the young bloke's cruiser was bogged on the rear diff - neither would attempt to go out and recover them - so he called me.
They all laughed when he told them that I was on the way out there with a Landrover. The smile ended up on my face though - we tied the Mazda to the rear end of the young bloke's cruiser, I let they tyres on the Disco down to about 12 psi, reversed out, hooked on the snatch strap, and pulled BOTH vehicles out in a single pull.
The young bloke now owns the Disco - it's his daily driver. :D
I also checked out a local non-branded club. The first thing I saw when I rolled up was a jacked up Patrol parked with a front wheel up on the gutter so it would look 'tough'..........no big deal, but it was a warning of what to expect inside, so I kept a low profile.
To cut a long story short, I didn't join :D
Cheers, Murray
I also get pretty sick of the ill-informed criticism. I've recently been giving service work on all the family vehicles to a mobile mechanic, and am getting pretty sick of the unnecessary negative comments about the Landy, such as' it's a stupid place to put the engine ECU' (referring to the placement behind the engine in the PUMA) and 'it's stupid to put such a small engine in a big heavy 4wd', gives a stupid little laugh when I inform him of any problem that needs attention, as though to say 'typical LR', next time this occurs I plan to call him on it, very frustrating as I have the ability to service all our own vehicles but no longer the inclination. Also having been a mechanic & service manager in 2 different Toyota dealerships in a previous life, I'm well aware of the emptiness of the myths.
The banter from friends on 4wd trips is generally much more good-humored, but certainly gets tiresome. 'Can I borrow your tirfor, I'd rather use that than get pulled out by a Land Rover'; 'I'd rather push my 80 series than ride in a Land rover' etc.
I've found a good way to shut them up- I have switched from calling their vehicles 'Jap' cars, which has lost it's sting over the years, to referring to them as 'Asian' cars. They have not yet developed a comeback for this. Funny thing is, the Asian 4wd owners seem to think of their vehicles as more Australian, which I find unfathomable.
Don't give a rats posterior what anyone else says. Let them think that way, keeps the ignorant %#*&$#^'s out of Land Rovers.
It's the innate "racism" (can't think of a better word ATM) that seems to be built into humans.
Works the same with footy team rivalry, the beer that you drink, the side of town you come from, the colour of your skin, what school you went to, etc, etc ..... and of course the car that you drive. Is "tribalism" a word?
Maybe the automatic criticism betrays an underlying inferiority complex. They're so desperate to justify their own decisions as being right that they have to bag everyone else.
They shouldn't read the latest 4 x 4 Australia issue - its packed full of Land Rovers and gives the 'new' Prado a bagging by comparison with a Disco.
thanks all :) this thread goes to show how nice landy owners really are. haha other then the defender owners who dont wave to me :( haha! and yes i know brendan at british 4x4. not well but i see his wife at horse stuff now and then. they are nice people and do live up this way. i got my thermostat from them. the manifold is trying a different place today for machining. its down with my mum at her work, and my partner is picking it up, an taking to a machining place londsdale way. so hopefully i have it back later today done so i can put my disco back together. there are 3 broken studs to pull out, i purchased stud extractors the other day to get them out with.
its funny how the car clubs are funny like that with landies, yet the landy one i keep meaning to go to a meeting of (third tuesday of the month i think?) they welcome other none landy 4wds! goes to show how good landy owners are. i lvoe that footage too haha. that is classic!
my disco will betaking me across the simpson in april. my dad is taking his patrol. will be a large mixed convoy. ill be the only landy i think. but every one goes ohh it wont get you across the desert.you need to have heaps of spare engine bits etc. it will get me across i dont doubt it.
fingers crossed the manifold gets done today :( LOL and hopefully i get a new drivers seat with an armrest before long to help me manage even further driving. jsut waiting for approval, but medical team are pushing for it.
i too have noticed that the folk who are most opinionated on landies, are ones who have never had anythign to do with them. ever. one of dads mates loves them. but was steered away by a mechanic who has never owned one, never driven one and never worked on one. always tell him he was silly for listening to the voice of someone who has no idea!
If a non-Landy owner complains about them you thump 'em.
If a Landy owner complains about them you sympathise.
Simple ;)
Top Gear created the Super-Cool Wall for the Defender Ninety.
Other cars came and went, the Ninety's still there. :D
