we have battery toothbrushes,,,,,I've got in the habit of inverting the battery as soon as I rinse it. yes they will switch on bouncing around.
having used electric toothbrushes for so long , it feels weird to give yourself a hand job.

Since having my dental implants fitted I have to use one of these - http://www.waterpik.com.au/product.aspx?id=2 - I opted for this particular model as when charged it can be used for at least a week between charges and is fully portable making it ideal for camping etc.
You can also get toothbrush attachments for it, so it might be a solution for you to consider. It certainly works :)
