I owned a series 3 SWB many years ago, with the spare wheel mounted on the bonnet, forward visibility was a problem on high-country tracks. That's with a skinny wheel on a series bonnet, I would imagine that driving with a wide wheel mounted on a frame on top of the Puma bonnet would be like being blindfolded. Forget the 'compliance', what about the risk to other road users, esp pedestrians?Quote:

This might generate some ideas. Here's a shot of my home made fitting.
It comprises a sheet of steel underneath the bonnet which is bolted though to the checker plate. Four large rubber door stops from Bunnings provide the pads on which the tyre sits. A length of steel bar bent to shape and bolted right through makes the bracket. The wheel is held on to the bracket with another bar bolted through (not shown in the pic. Total cost about $30.

Weren't there some ADR rules/regs that make these aftermarket bonnet mounted spare wheel carriers illegal?
I was looking into getting a bonnet mount for my second spare a while ago but seem to remember there were a few legal (or illegal) issues with doing so. I've not actually found any direct links or excerpts of any relevant legislation or guidelines that say one way or the other, just lots of "apparently..." kind of quotes and speculation.

I will be doing it. Just has to be. I will go the rijidij way. For those hairy point where vision is difficult in the high country I will run the front camera.

Oh, I should point out ADR's are not retrospective. Those with Series Landrovers are ok to have a wheel on the bonet.

The Landrovers at the time conformed to ADR 8. If they didn't, they wouldn't have been registered here.
When I done mine it was a lot cheaper to buy the kit as parts rather than a kit.
It's been on close to 10 years with no probs, although I may have added extra bracing.
Most of the time it doesn't cause vision issues. But at times I have had too remove it.
Regarding ADR's, pink slips, it is so open to interpretation. But IMHO mine is illegal.
