It seems there aren't many places around here to get a great pie. I had one a couple of weeks ago up in Browns Plains - the pastry recipe they used must have been "one of sand and two of cement" and being a meat pie, I think the meat used was roadkill. It was crying out for some sauce.....or I was at least.

Great pies to be had from the bakery next to the Victoria Hotel in Strathalbyn

Dayboro bakery are pretty good if they don't "over cook the pastry". They do a nice "cheesy bacon sausage roll" too

Bakery at Warner are good also, but the best pie I've ever had in Australia was one I had at the "Ocean View Winery" while watching John Williamson play a concert. Everything about it was perfect, the pastry, the steak, the flavour and the size.

I'd have agreed regarding Yatala pies right up until last week. I'd had a flying (well, driving) trip to Yamba for a few hours.... coming past Yatala at about half six dropped in to buy a family pie to feed myself and the missus when I got home.

Beef pie... how hard can that be? Full of bloody gristle and lacking in flavour.... gawd I was unhappy !

Up til then I'd always had great pie and peas every time.
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

Most of the one's I'd have said have already been mentioned multiple times...

-Freddo's pies - but they also have a second shop in East Maitland on the highway now, northbound.
    -Pie in the Sky
    -Beechworth bakery

But one of my favourites is a little one on Melbourne St, East Maitland called Blakeney's pies, never had a bad one, and not a flaky pastry, more a short pastry.

Dunedoo pie shop is better than anything else for probably a 100k's or more, but I wouldn't say one of the best.

As for sauce, if it needs it, it's not worth eating.

    Another vote for Freddo's

    Two more in NSW:
Hayden's Pies - 166 Princes PIEway, Ulladulla (5 minutes down the road, we had to turn back to get more Butter Chicken pies)
Mountain High Pies - 293 Great Western Highway, Wentworth Falls (Lamb, Rosemary & Shiraz. Mmmmmm)

It's been a while since I was at either of these places but Shortty's Little Pie Shop in Cann River and Molly Mae's in Heathcote were excellent.
I think it was Molly Mae's that did a pie called 'The Bloody Brilliant'.
    It was too
