Please! I don't want a political discussion, politicians are doing nothing, none of them. so far at least. I started this thread to get the discussion going, and thank you all who have contributed so far. What is apparent is the effect the Duopoly of W & C are having on them, not only them, the cops were targeting truckies at a Coles distribution depot today and this was aimed at companies not drivers who were cutting corners as a direct result of Coles pressure. I have some first hand knowledge of how they operate i.e pay contractors and I can tell you all they screw down hard.. very hard, not just Coles but Woolies too. God knows what they are doing to the farmers I'm a POME blow-in as of about 10 years now, I love this country so bloody much it's breaking my heart to see what's going on, I can only imagine how the born & breds among us are feeling about it.

    Interest on Drought

    Double edged sword.

The wide spread rains bring on fresh feed and the Farmers lucky enough to be left with some cash after the drought will be looking to restock, the others will have to wait to refinance, needing to prove that they have the means to repay.

Initially the first in, will be able to buy their store stock at cheap prices and as the supply dries up the prices go up, then as more Farmers get the finances they need and they find their borrowed dollar's doesn't set them up for a profitable year as their loan interest is chewing at any money they make.

As they say - "it does not rain money". Many of the farmers round here, if not most, have had at most two good seasons after ten years of drought - and they not only had little income over those years, but still have to service the debt that built up over that time.

And they often cannot even walk away, because their debts exceed (or pretty close) the equity they have in the property; if they walk away, they have nothing, and still have some of the debt. If they hang on, at least there is a roof over their heads.

Yes, it can take years to get back on your feet, my memories of central Qld. as a lad many years ago, is the huge number of mummified sheep, and the smell. However, the full dam in Cloncurry means they may not have to evacuate the town. Without the support of the town, & the infrastructure that represents, to those on the land it could be the final nail. Bob

Was it full from rain or the transfer from the other dam?

My father told me, years ago, the Aborigines in the north west used to say, you see pelicans, heavy rain coming. Bob
