Funny how Land Rovers are the center of all ills when everything is ok, however as soon as --it hits the fan you don't hear the wowsers say a bad word about them? My Wife is from the mother Country so I hope all the Inlaws and Outlaws are ok?
Somerset has been under water for a month with an occasional mention in the news. Now the Thames is flooding it occupies all the evening news report. Seems nothing else is happening in the world. Or is it just that the news crews and their bosses all live around the Thames and so it is not far to go and report on it.
One good point is that the flood levels on the Thames have yet to reach nor are they projected to reach those seen in 1947. Unfortunately since then they have been building houses on the flood plains as it is cheaper to build on the flat land. These houses are of course below the flood line with predictable results.
A council has been selling sand bags (called flood sacks) to their locals for £30 for 4 on the basis this is not an emergency. These are just the bag you still need to supply the sand.
They only sent the army in last week, 4 weeks too late, Yet once the Thames was starting to get near flood level, the Army went in straight away to help all the rich home owners.
Well... The priority has always been around saving property instead of farm land. London is far more densely populated than Somerset.
It's also worth noting that 'Somerset' translates to 'Summer Settlement'. It always used to flood, hence why people only used to live there in the summer!
I think it's a bit rich the locals blaming Environment Agency & lack of dredging, causing the flooding... Personally I'd blame the 3x months of rain and living in the middle of a flood plain!!??!!
Let's look at the pattern, Qld floods in 74, almost 40 years later several burbs built lower than that level a dam mismanaged and not enough drainage imposed on the new developments by council, all in the name of profit. New Orleans , burbs below water level and poor drainage , again profit motivated. Now u.k how many recent housing developments are below that 47 flood line with insufficient drainage? And how many of the older areas that flooded previously have had either nothing done or half blocked/ overgrown drainage jobs done? Again profit not people.
P.s someone forgot the third, floods u.k, drought Australia, and record blizzards North America.
Locally we have had the same thing with floods in 98 and several hundred homes affected by poor and blocked drainage, now with a development of several thousand blocks ,actually opposed by both local councils as the runoff will cause flooding in properties downstream , being approved as in forced through ,by the state govt.
