Hello message only
Hi to everyone. Just trying to sort my way through how this all works. I have never been on a forum site before.
Bob owns a 1995 130 tdi defender crew cab with 500,000km on the clock. We had previously put a 750 mm extension in the chassis, with the view to building a slide on motorhome for it.
Now we have transfer box problems, after only putting in a new gearbox and transfer box about 2 years ago.
Bob is now talking about not spending any more money on it. Suggestions for a good 2nd hand transfer box would be appreciated.
We have now purchased an ex British Army RB44 with the view to putting the motor home on that instead.
Regards Denise

Hello, and I must say you are brave in getting an RB44, not from first hand experience, but only by reputation! (after reading this article: rb44-are-they-really-as-bad-as-people-say.66195/)
Post up some photos. Would be interested in seeing how you're building it.
Cheers
David

Welcome, it will be good to read real info about the RB44 (they don't seem to have had a good press).

Hi Denise and welcome.
I wish you well with the RB44, not a common vehicle in Australia and according to some, just as well.
It'll be good to get some real and not hearsay feedback on your vehicle. There's a pile of expertise here and most are only too happy to help out.
From memory, there was a guy in Qld a year or two ago who imported a couple of RB44's with a view to bringing in more as the MOD sold them off. Don't know what happened,
but have a feeling he may have passed away so the scheme never got going properly.
The RB44 is similar to the Australian Oka in that it has a Perkins Phaser engine and Dana axle assemblies. Though the Oka has 4 wheel disc brakes and doesn't suffer from steering issues. The RB44 has/had constant 4WD, not sure of the maker of this or the gear box. The Oka has a Spicer gearbox. It may have been the constant 4WD that lead to reports of poor steering ?
Anyway all the best and hope to hear more from you.
There's a fair bit of expertise here if you need it for the 'Oka common' bits.

Welcome to the forum
That RB44 did you buy it from the Gold Coast? I do believe it was the only one in Aus. The previous owner was a really nice and likeable fellow, and yes if same, did pass away about this time last year.. RIP
