This is just perfect proof why our pollies don't need a second stick to play with... they are flat out playing with the one they've got!! 8O

Why would you only zoom in on 4WD???? I did my license test in a rear wheel drive 4 cyl jap box... That gave me the right to drive a rear wheel drive V8 - of 3 times the horse power.... or a frontwheel drive Turbo - that I bought a few years later -(and yes folks I did manage to survive!! despite the fact I could change lanes with no steering wheel work.... just lots of right foot on a wet road!)

The current system doesn't teach ANYONE how to DRIVE - it teachs them how to pass a test. NONE of the stuff in that test will save your life when you need it.

If these dopey buggers in Canberra ever wake up they will realise that what is needed is a way to teach EVERYONE how to DRIVE before they get a license... not not just how to stop at the right signs and parallel park!!

The driving lessons that helped me survive the first 10 years I had a license were not from the test I past.... they where from the years of paddock bashing and learning how to stop 2 tons of sideways steel... [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif[/img]


I digress.... I don't have a problem with pollies saying 4WD owners should know how to drive and handle their vehicles..... I'm sure none of us would...

BUT stop picking on one small group and look at the whole problem.... then maybe they would realise that many real 4WD owners know their vehicles better than most averages drivers elsewhere...

Mr scrubby needs to be run down, reversed over and run down again.

Part of the irony is that I hear he ran down and killed somebody in a 4x4 with a bull bar (he is also against bull bars).

I've followed this argument on one of the other forums with interest.

Essentially many of the arguments are frivolous, and there is no legitimate way that they can deliniate between a 4x4 (SUV) or rgeular car.

Look at performance, a cayene is a SUV, but it's on road dynamics are probably better than many cars.

Big 4x4s?? they come in all sizess now, and many are shorter than the average family wagon (falcon or commodore) and only about 20mm wider.

Transfer cases?? Many of the small 4x4's have transfer cases as well.

Weight ?? how heavy is a statesman compared to a series 3 LWB?? not much different.

Height?? how big are some of the commercial vans around the place at the moment??

4x4 or 2x4?? how many 4x4 wagons are there out there. And what about hubs. Unlocked mine is only a 2wd still??

There is no way that they can deliniate between 4x4's and cars. The only way is to have a list of specific vehicles or to be so specific it isn't funny. Either way it is discrimination.

I don't mind the idea of testing to ensure that people are able to understand the difference in how to drive a larger vehicle (dynamics, accelleration and larger stopping distances), but this man annyoys me no end, and the way he pushes it is even worse.

I agree with extra training and a tougher test. And a special licence for 4WDs -- and trailers, people movers and other types of vehicle. Even older cars. How many people under 25 would know what a choke is, for example? How many of any age really understand how to drive with ABS?

ok my blood has reached boiling point ... does this clown drive or has he ever driven a 4wd... i have a 2.5 ton truck that has drum brakes and no power steering let alone ABS... and i have no speical licence ... nor any instruction on how to load the potentional missiles onto the back of it ...
this guy is a clown who just wants to get his name in the paper ... real 4wd owners and judge traffice problems far better then the average joe in a ford...
they say there has been in increase in car crashes with 4wd over the past few years ... i wonder if that increase is in line with the huge increase in 4wd sales ... does the %crashes stay the same or decrease ???

and the 50 km speed limit is a joke ... in the USA they did the opposite and the crashes dropped ... and u pay more attention when travelling faster...
