    Post your Ancestors!

Got any interesting ones from any time or place in history?

I'll start with my mob... Turns out a great great etc etc grandfather grew the first new rose native to Australia. The Rose Of Australia Pub sits nextdoor to where his garden used to be in Erskinville in Sydney. The same family had farm land that is now the Botanic Gardens in Sydney. Wouldn't mind a bit of that land today!

In one of Henry Lawson's stories he describes being able to hear from quite a distance the women of my family arguing from their remote property in Cambletown Sydney.

My maternal grandfather, Alfred Smith, was the youngest grandson of Granny Smith, of apple fame. He grew up in Gulgong, and served his time as a coachsmith apprentice alongside a young Henry Lawson (who failed to finish his apprenticeship.

He was, from all accounts, a better tradesman than he was a businessman, and went broke at least twice. I only knew him as a very old man - he died in his late nineties while I was still at school. I have two pieces of furniture which show his skill as a cabinetmaker, and also have his violin.

Gone back to one who was flag bearer for William the Conquerer, my favorites are Eleanor the She Wolf of France, (daughter called Eleanor ) and" No Flint Grey in the American Revolutionary War who did a bayo not charge at midnight(cheating) , a good story.

the original grandparent in Australia was sent to Port Arthur for decking 6 police offices back in the old country.
he would then proceed to be good for about 18 months then go on a rampage in Port Arthur until subdued after a few times of this he was given 100 lashes straight (one of only 3 in Tasmania to receive this)
after all this he was released early and married anther convict who was sent of for prostitution

of more newer times I am related to the ex premier of Tasmania (the one who stood down)
