The Samsung Galaxies have an external RF connection. You do have to modify the back panel I believe.

We currently use a few Samsung Galaxy's, a few Nokia Lumia Windows phones. Every one of us has had an iphone. None of us are interested in replacing them with anything similar. We are all fighting over the old Nokia, even its speaker phone is better. The ONLY thing it doesn't do that we would all like is wifi hotspot its data to our tablets. Younger people used to the pathetic battery life on new smart phones think it's a legend. I only want the antenna slot for when I go bush, it's not a deal breaker so I'm not about to drill a hole in the back of my current Galaxy.

An antenna that actually plugs in is the only way in the bush,with Telstra.There are other types of patch cords that don't actually plug in,but i have found them hopeless.

I only need TXT and voice calls when in the bush so use an old telstra tough phone,i use the sim out of my Motorolla smart phone.

I find often with the phone not plugged into the antenna there is no reception at all,plug it in and it has full reception.

i have the antenna mounted on the roof on the rear Rhino rack.

And as for the HTC,my wife has always had them,i like the way the logic is on them.Battery life on the earlier models was hopeless,the newer models are much better.Both my sons that work for me now have the S4 Galaxy for a while now,had the Iphone before,neither say they would ever go back to one.

Whatever rocks your boat,everyone has different likes and dislikes,if we were all the same it would be boring.........

I have a Telstra Pulse, lasts about 2 to 3 weeks on standby, just your average normal phone, apps, broadband, camera, 4G with the rural tick, I'm on a prepaid plan, phone cost me $49, have a 6mth period of re-charge, works for me:D

Geez Baz, it must have a low pulse rate for an Android phone to get weeks on standby. :D I'll look at one for sure, thanks.

My old iPhone 4 would not last anywhere near a day on battery. When I upgraded to iPhone 5 I gave it to my daughter, but disabled all smart features so it was a stupid phone. All it did was make or receive calls. Battery life went to almost two weeks on a charge. That was a two year old phone too.

That would give you your stupid phone that can be smart when required.

Sometimes I need or want internet on my laptop when away from home or free wifi. If I have phone reception I use tethering to make the phone a modem then I have internet on the laptop. It uses the included data on my phone plan. Just web browsing and a bit of forum posting as well as a few e-mails uses bugger all data. USB cable between phone and laptop is all that is needed. I am not sure if you can tether a tablet.

Can I suggest you consider getting two separate devices?

I'm sure you can get a phone that does what you want without the WiFi hotspot pretty cheaply. There are phones out there designed for jsut such a purpose (but can't name any off the top of my head, just know I've seen them advertised). Then get a dedicated 4G wifi hotspot device. or if its just for one laptop, get a prepadi 4G USB stick. I've got one that I keep in my work bag that comes out once or twice a month.

Just looking quickly on the Telstra site, this might do what you want?

Seems you have conflicting purposes for a phone. You want the good bits of a dumb phone but also want some smart bits of a smart phone. You can't have it all unfortunately. Your best bet is to get a high end smartphone, and something that isn't Apple so you can enjoy a better screen size.

If you want screen size, I think iPhones are perfect. Any bigger and you need giant hands to use it (or turn it into a two hand job)

If it's any bigger it may as well be called a tablet! Anything that sticks out of my shirt pocket is not classed as a phone, gets called a tablet.
