Own a Credit Card - WATCH!

A friend sent me this. If you think no one will ever get hold of your card details because you're careful, just watch how easy and sophisticated this game has become!

My bank called me a few weeks ago and I kept rejecting the private number they even comtacted my work to tell me that $3.47 was taken from my card. They said it was most likely a random number test as I am always quite secure with my card. They cacelled the card and sent me out a new one. It was a bit of a hassle but the banks are fairly good at making sure you don't get cleaned out.

There are other ways of getting details AND Pins and I'm not referring to scanners on ATMs. As a software developer I've signed 'Non Disclosure' so I can't describe them, however my advice would be to do as I do - use a debit card and only leave very small amounts in the account. There is NO other protection from fraud and I doubt there ever will be..

My card just got hit - $1800 and $70 - one in Aust ($1800 worth of takeway in western sydney a Macaffee subscribtion in the US). The card has not been used for 6 months - so not skimmed or anything like that - most likely one of the businesses I have previously done business with have been hacked or someone has onsold my details. Again I was notified by the bank - I did not even know about it.

Issue should be resolved OK after the investigation period.

Another alternative is to use a one-time 'credit' card for on-line purchases, the suspected source of my experiences.

VISA do a pre-paid card, available from various outlets - my last was from a BP servo - and the Post Office do a re-loadable VISA card.
The first is non-redeemable and sold in fixed amounts, so you need to plan accordingly or use the last few dollars on gadgets from dX.com....
The second is perhaps more convenient, as you can manage it like areal card and keep it going just by adding more 'credit'.

I understand that many banks etc in the US will sell you a set of C/Card numbers, also pre-paid, for on-line and phone purchasing. - Saves on having to go out an buy a physical card / paperwork / etc.

Have had the same experience, Bank(s) report a funny or odd transaction from anywhere, usually overseas, and the card is cancelled, charge queried/resolved and new card sent out... Again.

Yep we got hit through i tunes, 33 times in the last three months $600 worth in $20 and $30 amounts. The bank didnt tell us and we dont use our card much either, pretty grumpy about that.
Then they told me they wanted $5 per dispute to sort it out. Told them it would cost them a mortgage and three incomes if they didnt. No result yet.
Will be using a disposable card from now on.

How much ends up being the card holders problem when the banks get fired up to sort the prob's?

I hear big numbers are taken by bad guys, but who ultimately cops the losses? Is there a excess like in insurance claims?
    Hoo-Roo,

    Dave.
