Some years ago, the company I worked for hosted a meeting of members of the International Cable Protection Committee International Cable Protection Committee - people involved in international submarine cable maintenance - that is, using cable ships. Now these people were used to looking at navigation charts for many countries around the world as they show where all the international submarine cables are located.
One day over lunch in Sydney, one of the US delegates (from AT&T) told my wife and I that he and his girlfriend were going to spend a day driving up to Cairns.
I quickly scotched that idea by telling him Australia was almost the same size as the contiguous United States.
He was surprised as he just looked on Australia as just an island - and an island can't be too big - can it?
I was amazed as he was used to looking at maps of the world (and the charts mentioned earlier).
