Thank for the comments although, you all seem a little bias. To answer a question or two we do a bit of w.end touring but are planning a trip to the cape and back next year. We have been looking at a couple of 2001 TD5 discovery’s with low K's. With out the usual Landrover bias is their any thing we should watch when buying... Any "common" problem’s??
I have heard the wheel sensors can give some trouble and are expensive to replace, Any one had any experience with this problem ?
Thanks again
PK.

I am not sure if we are bias or just speak fondly of what we own and enjoy.
I had a ABS sensor fault in the frount left corner, was told before they even looked at it that it might be a big $ job.
Turned out easy, after the higher springs had gone in I had just stretched the line a bit too much.
They fixed it back into place and left enough length for me to play with, small $ job.
Funny thing is no problems with any of the other sensors.
As far as commen problems go I think it is a hard one to answer.
BB has a point (as usual)
In my years of car ownership I have developed a suspicion of mechanics whose first reaction is to suck breath through their teeth, make skippy noises, scratch their heads and rub their chin stubble with grease engrained fingers and exclaim that they have never seen this happen before!...."this could be expensive...you'd better leave it with us for a week or three" (while we work out the bill) 8O
Renaults, Alfas, Mazdas, Austin Healys, Land Rovers and all
Then they ask you what is wrong with it :?: 8O
In the words of Leo Kottke:
"why can't you fix my car
Its not a Mercedes its just a Chevrolet"
I promise I wont make a habit of making points, or someone will take me seriously 8O
I was lucky, my LR mechanic was good enough to tell me that it wasnt as bad as he thought at first.
But it is hard to find these types of mechanics sometimes.

"What is wrong with you?"
LR owner:
"I am suffering from<span style="color:red"> Mad Land Rovers Disease</span>"
Mechanic:
"Take two aspros while we work out which specialists to send you to....now are there any other things troubling you....times up....next please"
one_iota: That's one bad sounding disease you have there
PK: Seriously, as with any other brand of vehicle Land Rovers do have their occassional faults. Many of which are blown out of all proportion by owners of other brands, to make themselves feel better about not owning a Land Rover.
A browse through the technical forum on this site will show questions that others have asked about Discoveries and the answers to same will indicate the severity and frequency (or otherwise) of the problem. And usually a solution as well.
The upshot is that many Land Rovers have happily criss-crossed this continent over the years and survived. These days this includes Discos.
So, regardless of what you buy the same rules apply: Buy a good one (get it checked by someone who knows what they are doing), keep it maintained, drive it within its abilities (i.e. don't go stupid)... and it will work for you.
After all, if Land Rovers were rubbish, we wouldn't all be here :!:
