What are the most satisfying jobs?

I thought the results of this survey were surprising. They certainly reject the idea that the more money you make, the happier you are.
I was also surprised that teachers didn't get a mention, as I know many teachers love their work.
I think the most satisfying jobs would be those which result in an obvious improvement in the lives of the workers themselves or the people they work with. I love my job.
What do you think? What jobs do you think would be the most satisfying?

Clergy at No1 doesn't surprise me, but Chief executives and senior officials at No2 does. Maybe they have more time to complete surveys as they have minions doing the boring stuff.

So they way I look at it, and extra £97,132 (572%) income for a relative reduction of 4% in job satisfaction.
I can handle that, even the extra tax I would have to pay.

    Where do I sign up?

    2. Chief executives and senior officials

    Fair enough.

I suppose job satisfaction also depends on what kind of work the person actually likes. I can't imagine too many CEOs wanting to be clergy, or vice-versa.

One good piece of advice I heard was that students should figure out what they like doing best as a hobby and try to make it into a job. The problem with that is, of course, that some students just want to play computer games all day, so we could end up with a surplus of game designers!

For myself, I always liked reading and language, so now that's my job. Not well-paid at all, but satisfying.

Actually a fair few CEO's and senior management already work the same as some clergy! They preach One thing then do another.

I think the two most satisfying jobs I've had in 45+ years of working were:

Restoration planning for Australia's international telecommunications services (back when OTC provided all international telecoms). It involved working out just how we'd provide comms after a major systems failure and meant a lot of liaison with other international carriers. It was satisfying when it all came together during a failure.

But the most satisfying was managing the international submarine cable station on Norfolk Island. I loved working with my staff, Norfolk Telecom, the Island Administration, and the people on the Island.

I also really enjoyed managing the two Sydney (Broadway and Paddington) international telecoms facilities. Working with the staff and contractors was sometimes frustrating but, making progress on improving the operation of the building and facilities made it satisfying. Then it was all taken out of our hands and handed to a contract company (who didn't really care) when we merged with Telecom (Telstra).

About 7 years ago, my wife and I found ourselves in the (painful) place where we could choose our further directions in life.
So we looked at what we loved doing and went for it.
She went back to Uni and studied Accountancy, heading to non-profit/ Public enterprise.
I joined the SES and Studied Outdoor Recreation.
Things haven't been to crash hot for anyone in Qld gov't lately, so that has been in no way, smooth sailing.

SES demands for my time (by choice) have seen Outdoors business stuff put on hold for a couple of years, but the Landy info business has sprung up on the side.

Above all else, we are doing what we WANT to do and see the opportunities as they arrive.
If you loathe going to work, then start making the move TODAY! Get out before it kills you, your relationships or your soul.
It won't be easy, quick or even succesful, but as soon as you make the decision you will feel the load lift as say "Why the fluffy-duck did I wait so long?!?"
Life is short, do what you love and others will get it! Thanks to the interwebs, I can sell to anyone in the world sitting at home in my undies (no, no right now).
Sites like 5RR and 10RR are places you can contract out your services in a global market.

    Cheers, BDave.

Of course there can be a BIG difference in job satisfaction depending not on what you do, but where you do it.

eg. a self employed tiler may be more satisfied than a company secretary for a really ****ty company.

    Isn't clergy a protestant term?

Personally, I think any job where you help someone in trouble is a worthwhile job (volunteer or paid). I speak from experience.
