Truly is a sad state of affairs mate when i was living up at cape tribulation in the wonderful daintree rainforest the rubbish that used to wash up on the beach's was ****house. where there is humans there is rubbish but the worst i have ever seen was india they treat the waterways like a massive dumping area truly putrid.

Do a quick google search under - ocean gyres plastic. That should give you some more info.....

yep the ocean is now a big soup of plastic that will last forever, after all it's what plastic is designed to do.

Yes, it's said there is an enormous number of shipping containers floating out there after being lost overboard. Wonder how many small boats sink after hitting a container floating just below the surface.

The amount of rubbish floating around is incredible. When living on Bribie, we made it a habit to collect all rubbish at "our" part of the beach (we were living at the waterfront basically) every time we went there for a walk (which we did on a daily basis, more or less). We never returned with less than a carrier bag full of rubbish any time and did not have to make an effort to get it filled, just picking up all rubbish along the way we were walking. We did not even have to bring a carrier bag, usually there are always plenty of them around somewhere. I am just wondering how it may look now, "our" stretch of the beach, as we cannot fulfill this duty any longer

Its not hard to see why when we look around at how people act. The amount of rubbish that 1000 students at my school can generate in a day is astounding - and they look surprised when asked to pick it up. Multiply that by 7 billlion people and that's the ocean.
The idea that the ocean is a bottomless pit and it doesn't matter if we dump stuff in it is just too widely accepted. For example, dumping dredging spill in the Great Barrier Reef when the responsible decision would have been to bring it onshore just seems irresponsible. I'd hate to see the reef ruined in my lifetime, but its being damaged every year.
