Euro Trip - I'm simply not interested

The best holiday i ever took was a 6 month trip around Australia going everywhere a ****box ford cortina could take me. The places i saw the people i met mean far more to me than anything i did in other countries i visited Spain, India, Japan, USA, Canada, Hong kong, Singapore, China, Greece, Italy, and i played tourist in those countries and i saw some amazing things but none of that even came close to what our back yard has to offer. I think far to many aussies are so keen to head overseas then experience what they have here. Then before they know it they are old to properly see Australia but can tell the grandkids about the time they saw the grand canyon then when little billy asks hey poppy what's the territory like? don't know mate never been there. It amazes me how many stinky poms living out of the back of a clapped out van have seen more of Australia than the people that live here. In terms of people saying things about culture you would be surprised how much the culture changes from coast to coast. I am not saying don't travel overseas but see your own country first before your to old and reliving your stories about backpacking around Europe in your twenties.

Hi Ron. I know how you feel. Maybe you should do what some friends of mine do. They go cruising, but do not go on organised tours. They find a local taxi driver and negotiate a days charges and then ask him to take them to the places he thinks are interesting and FREE. They have a good time. Yes I have been oversees, Found Rome boring. I would do England again and Scotland if I had the chance. I really prefer Australia. But I too have a problem. I will happily go travelling but once the vehicle is turned towards home......I have trouble stopping it. It is like a homing pigeon, and wants to get there. Jim

I know I've said this to you before Ron, I did 5/6mths touring Europe on a motorcycle on my own, it was a great experience, I loved Rome, and walked around it for 2 days, the Vatigan is amazing, especially in the bowels of the place, we got hunted out by security(no go zone;))Athens, the ruins are amazing, Dublin lots of history and Celtic ruins also(people are super friendly, probably the friendliest, Glasgow, again amazing and super friendly and the north of Scotland is so beautiful, did the Isle of Arran while up north, so lovely, Geneva, loved Switzaland, castles everywhere, Pisa, was a bit disappointed here, not with the town, but so many American tourists, well tourist period and the things associated vendors that go with tourist zones, Salzburg, an amazing and beautiful town, as was Strazburg, so many castles, so little time:D

Museums, Museums, Museums, towers, towers, towers, castles, castles, castles, ruins, ruins, and more ruins, I loved it:D

Food beer and wine was good also;)

I did Beaulieu Motor Museum in '96 & would recommend it. Also, if driving, try & get a 4x4 vehicle as, on a lot of country roads, the fences are solid rock so, if you're in a conventional vehicle, you won't see over them.

I went thru a period of bum sitting and wanting to stay put.

My Betty loved Lennies books and really wanted to take a trip over to the Gunbarrel and all the places he wrote about.
I promised her we would but I left it to late.
I'm prepping Me Disco to bring it up to scratch and will head over there.

I will carry her ashes to keep me company.

I have been away for work, but it's a different experience altogether when you go back to the same spot for a holiday visit.

I wish the money tree would bear some dollars to allow us to visit the UK as I have only been once oversea's and that was to New Zealand.

New Zealand's natural beauty is something to seen to be believed, but I would love to go the the UK to be able to check out their historical side of things.

If you or Elizabeth are at all interested in military history this year is the 70th anniversary of D Day,and there is a large re-enactment planned for the June weekend in the south of England ;)

I'm off in 3 weeks with a group of military vehicle restoration enthusiast from Aus and NZL going to the D day celebrations in Normandy.

I'm an interloper, so to speak I don't own a WW2 vehicle but will travel with this group for a while. They have about 10 vehicles of different types they have shipped over there. The plan is to land the gear in Sicily and drive through Europe as a bit of a holiday but with an emphasis on stopping and seeing some of the sights / museums related to WW2 on the way. Finally reaching Normandy to participate in the D day celebrations in June after about a month on the road.

I'll jump ship just prior to D day. Would be good to go but I can't remain with my travelling companions while in Normandy. They are allocated camping space in a military zone, blowins not allowed.

This is my mates transport for the duration of the trip, A restored Dodge 'Carryall'.

Go , the worst that can happen is you might enjoy yourself :o.

If it's not something you've seen or done before, the WW2 memorials in Northern France are definitely worth seeing.
