    Comparing gas prices (household)

    HI all

My gas bill for the quarter is $130. My previous bill was around the same. I only have a gas cook top and gas oven which I rarely use. I might use one burner on the gas cook top say once a week. I cook mainly outside on my bbq and the 9kg bottle lasts nearly two months.

    I have electric hot water

I am feeling ripped off! I am getting a plumber out this week to do a leak detection test.

    What is everyone else paying?

    Thanks
    Andrew

Hi Andrew , Your better off ! Don't you remember when It was sold off , well we were told here in Vic. that we would all be better off because there would be more competition , and we could have so much more choice ,and prices would be so much more competitive . That's not just Gas , but Electricity as well . I don't even want to talk about Water . Sorry Andrew I can't compare my Gas to yours because I have Gas hot water , and heating plus the stove , but I do know how you feel , and yes It is a rip off , lets face It , It's not like there's a shortage . cheers Jim...

How can you say that, privatisation and globalism isn't a good thing?

Look at all the manufaturing jobs that have been created?

When we had the Commonwealth Bank and the various state banks there was very little competition, when they sold off the CBA etc, look at how much competition we have within the banks. Each bank now competing to create new and wonderful charges. We consumers should be happy about all the free enterprise we now have. (Consume, pay tax and die.)

With the current sale of Medibank Private and recent demutualisation of MBF into Bupa etc. we will now be unfetted by the constraints of government on medical/health insurance funds and be able to empty our pockets more quickly on the alter of free enterprise.

    Oh what a wonderful day!

I'm in the same boat. Have a careful look at your statement as you are probably paying $120 for the privilege of having gas connected to your house. That is my experience anyway

are you on 45kg gas cylinders supplied by the gas company?

if so return your 45kg and hook up your own 9kg as I believe this works out cheaper...well cheaper if you can find somewhere that still fills them

exactly weeds. We have gas cooktop, 9kg bottle lasts 3-5months - the cooktop burners are much more efficient than an outdoor BBQ. I paid $22 at masters for swap and go. so on average about 18/quarter.

If it is on natural gas you will need to change the jets to run LPG.

My house does not have gas which is a bit of a pain to cook oriental with a wok. So I use one of those small single burner camping stoves that use gas cannisters - total cost is about $20.

Works really well and is cheap as chips for the few times I need to cook with gas.

Gas bottles are $143 delievered, I sell them at home. you are meant to pay $30ish P/A rental, also

9KG's if you could be bothered are cheaper at bunnings and the like, I had seen them for $19-$22, I was paying over that direct from Kleenheat, I have since moved the 9kgs on to the local store, I never wanted them

Not having ever been a natural gas customer, is there a component of the bill that is for the service itself? if so surely you could get an abolishment done, then just have to fit a conversion kit to your cooktop

Most people that i delievre for if the cook only a 45kg will last around 12 months with a family, some you don't get for over 2 years

It's not quite that easy. When a stove has a low setting on the knob before you push and turn it to off, that setting is quite different on NG compared to LPG. A NG regulating valve will give you 80% to 100% flame control unless you file the low stop, which doesn't work as well as having the correct valve. The oven on the last stove I converted had an adjustable minimum flow set screw on the thermostat and so does the job well. The burners however still annoy the cook as they are touchy at low settings. I can't get new valves as the stove is 30 years old.
