My heavy vehicle and bus license is a 0.000 limit,(charter/tourist/scheduledroute)as up here, the person being tested at a roadside test point has to prove that they are not going to start work driving a bus or has just finished. and if the officer involved wishes one can be taken to a station and blood tested.
BTW. my D1 auto speedo reads 5Klms over at 100k against the GPS on 245 x 16 tyres

I have just been out in SWMBO car. The speedo goes up in 5 Km increments.
The needle fits nicely between two points, making it about 4km wide.
There is no way anyone could tell me if I was one or two kays over.

So the speedo could read 41 kph, but the vehicle be doing 38 kph. Unless the speedo accuracy is verified by an independent source how could you be failed for speeding if you were not 100% definitely speeding.
Gee, things have changed. I drove through a stop sign during my test and still got my licence. That was in 1965 though!

The practice is that speedos are set to over-read by the maximum error. It is why most cars built since about 2000 are actually travelling about 5 to 6kph below the posted limit.
IMHO it is also why people believe that GPS are more accurate. Its not true, modern speedos are very accurate the problem is that manufacturers are required to artificially adjust the indicated speed by Government.
The first statement is correct and this would apply to an external speed device such as camera or radar gun. However when doing a driving test the examiner can only go by what the speedo in the car shows, regardless of its accuracy.Quote:
