It's a five cylinder and yes they have head issues if you don't use the correct coolent and don't look after it, stretch the budget and get a early Discovery 3 TDV6, 2006 model should be around $30,000, now that's a tow vehicle, 6 speed auto, 140Kw, 440Nm, will tow 3 tonne easy:BigThumb:Quote:

the td5 is a great engine , it will pull and grunt it's guts out until it literally collapses in exhaustion.
I would go with a manual for towing. With any landrover you can use low range for manuvering.
When the torque convertor unlocks up a hill you can really feel it.
Do you specifically want the diesel? The 3.9 and 4.0 do row really well but they'll cost in fuel.
On another front, if you get one with air suspension you won't be disappointed.

then at each destination will do some serious exploration, desert, cape and any other knarly place we can find, hopefully with fellow members around the country.
would love to take my series 1 but :( could be a bit slow though, but exceptionally good off road:twisted:
for less cash manual td5 seems the go
or a later model v6 auto

British Off Road have a TD5 Defender double cab for sale at about 22,+K and a 2000(pre-facelift) Disco 2 for 14,900,and a 2003 at $22,850 with all the bells and whistles including tow pack :) and they are not that far from you.

Re: above (4 gears not being enough), call me biased, and let it be known that I'm driving a 4.6L V8 Rangie, but on my cape trip last year when I had to tow a fully laden RR Classic on a 1.2t car trailer for 400km-odd, 4 gears were plenty! I had to slow down because the trailer was limiting my speed (not sensible to tow a vehicle above 80kmh anyway).
I was overtaking nomads in their 200 series cruisers with jayco's on the back, was bliss to drive through the small gulf country towns.

I towed a fully laden Amarok(2.5t) on a 900kg car trailer(3.4t all up) 200ks, cruise set on 100kph and was getting 15.3l/100k in the process, in my 2.7l TDV6, 6sp auto.Quote:

Interesting the the Auto/Manual debate is as strong with towing as off-roading. I guess it's personal preferance.

Looks like i have opened a can of worms here
but it is interesting to hear other peoples opinions
i am after an older vehicle as i do not mind doing a bit of work on them as you can get all the nice suspension snorkel bar work etc that will work well
just want something reliable when towing with reasonable l/100km
