Well the authorities did say NO and as a result it went for adjudication with all its associated costs.

The Court found that the authorities should have said YES meaning it was the authorities wasted the money.

My personal view is that I agree with the general sentiments expressed. You should carry the genetic tag (not the physical form) that you are born with for your entire life irrespective of what you do to your body or how you live your life. However, that view is not the view of the "law".

That's funny as we have a transgender person in our office and I live in a very small country town. Maybe you do work with transgender people and you just don't know?

If Norrie and people like Norrie want to be recognised as neither male or female, it should be up to them. Although in a country where being a biggot is actively supported by the leading political party and we still can't let two males or two females marry, I wonder how long it will be before this decision is revoked?

I don't want to make this an asylum seeker debate, but the costs of patrolling our borders, interdicting illegal arrivals and then housing, feeding, processing, guarding and the associated court costs eclipses the cost of Norrie's case to the extent they are in different universes.

More money is wasted on the Melbourne or Sydney fireworks each NYE than was spent once on Norrie's case.

A genetically normal individual can be distingiushed by looking at a normal stained blood smear that is used in all Full Blood Counts--at least back when I was a Pathology Technician, or looking at a live drop of blood under darfield or phase contrast microscopy [any one can do dark field with a microscope of about 350 dollars].

See a woman has a little progection on the nucleus of her Neurophil cells, where a man does not. This progection is called a Barr Body. So looking at a drop of blood does distinguish between a man and woman-- Even if a stupid court defines the person another way

I don't see why its such a big deal to some people.

All it means is that instead of two boxes on a form (Male and Female) there will be three boxes (Male, Female, Other). Already applies with our passports. Some people use the term S/Him for those who are neither female nor male.

There's very little genetic difference between males and females anyway (just as we're all homo sapiens and the talk about various race is irrelevant). All it takes is the right hormones and some surgery and we can change gender.

The reaction to this tells us more about the people reacting, and their apparent fear of people who are somehow 'different' in their eyes, than it does about anything else. Why do we insist on classifying people by gender or race or in other ways, and then comparing ourselves to try to decide who is superior or inferior? Who cares...not me. We're all just people.

    Careful JohnF...

Those "Stupid" courts also uphold the laws of this nation that allow you to go around Thumping Biblical material and prehistoric opinions in peoples faces without persecution.

The only reason this case has found itself being so widely talked about is because of Norrie's appearance.

Norrie does not fit in to the narrow minded, blinkered view of what conservative thinkers see as 'normal' person and can therefore be seen as some sort of lefty from a minority group. And as we all know, in Australia, minorities must be persecuted.

If people could spend a few minutes getting to understand the facts and background behind this case it might save them from looking like ignorant fools dressing up ill-informed opinions as facts.

Sure, have an opinion, share your thoughts but please, spend a few minutes trying to understand the issue and the details before reaching for the keyboard. Surely that's not too much to ask.

Don't think were talking about this law applying to genetically normal people. There are those who don't conform to the simple genetic XX or XY world. As previously mentioned:

    47XXY Kleinfelters
    45XO Turners
    48XX-XY Mosaic
    47XXX Triple X

What sex are these people? The one they chose to identify as to best get on with their life or as neither XX or XY to reflect the reality of their life.

Would we be happier if Norrie looked like this person?
