Suggest you get out and open your eyes. There are some pretty impressive cars getting around in China, manufactured under very similar joint venture arrangements to that proposed here. Most of the world's major car makers are already in China with joint venture manufacturing arrangements with local companies - Jaguar Land Rover is behind the 8 ball. It might surprise you to learn that the most common vehicle brand in China is VW - they went into a joint venture arrangement like this many years ago and have been reaping the benefits ever since.

Pretty much all of the vehicles made there under these joint venture arrangements are for local markets only - the "Chinese" cars that they export to Australia - you'll be looking hard to see any of these on the roads in China. ;)

Yep, VW got in early and has done well in China - there are Audis everywhere. GM has a big plant near Shanghai. JLR will manufacture in association with Chery and JLR's expertise will improve Chery's products too. JLR will sell lots of vehicles in China because of this deal.
Thailand has a similar set of rules, requiring local ownership in businesses set up by outside companies, and I don't see anyone complaining about the quality of the resulting vehicles sold here. Aren't Hiluxes supposed to be indestructible, they keep telling us?
Its a pity Australian governments weren't able to impose similar rules on car companies here, but our market is too small and not export-focussed, so we're missing out.

What is so impressive about cashing in on other countries engineering. what the hell can the Chinese offer in terms of technology and engineering to car makers that have been doing it for years? **** all. all they offer is cheap labour **** poor eco polices and crap QC. Many good cars from the west they based their designs on they turned into **** boxes why? because only about 20 years ago they were still building 3 wheeled pieces of crap.Not surprised at all about VW in china why would they ignore that market. And no i don't think tata sounds better but at least they have been making cars far longer than any Chinese brand with 4 wheels. How many times have you been to China? I have been 7 times and saw very little impressive LOCAL cars they only things in the rental fleet worth driving came from the west. How about you open your eyes:mad:

Geez - you really don't know too much about the motor industry do you. :D

You seem to have a downer on the Chinese because they are "cashing in on other countries engineering". Well I've got news for you - just about every other country in the world has done this in one form or another since the industry started.

Oh well - you go on with your views on the world, while the rest of us look with open eyes at what's out there and make our decision on what suits our needs, not on what flag is after the manufacturer's brand name. Your loss, not mine.

And as for how many times I've been to China - who's counting. I'm not into ****ing contests. :p

it took Japan 20 years to become a great automotive manufacturing country, it took Korea 10 years to become a great automotive manufacturing country. it took 5 years for china to become a great automotive manufacturing country.

in case you haven’t noticed china is a great manufacturing country, the numbers of cars manufactured in china are staggering. and as mentioned above.

NB VW is one of the owners of Great wall. it is because of this that VW developed there own ute and is marketed in other parts of the would next to the GW and the up market ute

How many Chinese cars are truly world class? Just because they pump out huge numbers dose not make them great. Quality over Quantity anytime

in short name a brand thats not made in china, starting with Holden dunny door, well not for the time being and well sorry you did say world class.

i do not think one of there rockets have blowen up yet. thay seem to be sending one up every week or so

Don't know much about the car industry you say. My uncle has been selling Subaru's in New zealand for over 40 years and has one of the biggest dealerships in the country and selling Hyundai's for over 20 years and i worked for him for 5 years before moving over here. Great wall motors approached him to sell their crap cars in NZ and invited him to the launch of their 4X4 model line up and tour the factory as i had time off i went with him what a eye opener that was. The whole approach to the Chinese way of car making is volume and speed of construction and as a result the final product is often very poorly made.After the tour and many test drives of Great wall cars and a few more of the locally made cars there was no way anything out of that country was going to be sold in the car yards he spent many years building up. The simple fact is they make **** cars and without the parent company keeping a very close eye what they do it would be a lot worse. I do believe in the future China will be very good at making cars that will compete with anything else on the market but right now they don't. Besides cheap labour and factory's that would would not be able to operate under European eco laws what are the Chinese contributing to the car company's setting up these joint ventures I mean what can they possible teach VW or Land rover company's that have been doing it for years. All they can do is make things cheaper which is easy to do when you pay your workers very little.

I think you will find that Holden's have been exported for many years in the USA, UK, SOUTH AFRICA, to name a few countries and the VE series HSV'S are truly a world class car that can compete with anything that AMG or BMW M division is making. And as for Chinese rockets what the **** has that got to do with Chinese cars?
