Today, I made an Aarken-Faarken
It has been a few months in the making, but I've finally made my aarken-faarken!
I was given some truck drums, and was going to make a 3-drum 'pot belly' design with air vents, a flue, and a hotplate on top (even sourced a bit of 20mm x 500mm dia plate for this very purpose!), but ended up going for an easier, bolt-together fire pit style.
Turned out OK!
Specs:
2x truck drums, inch-thick cast steel, approx 40kg ea, approx 450mm dia. Used 2 styles for aesthetics. 1 is ribbed for her pleasure.
4x 7/8"x2" bolts and nuts to suit.
3x strategic cuts with the plasma at 100A to make 3 legs (for stability on uneven ground)
1x 405mm dia circle of 5mm expanded mesh (sits in line with the lowest rib of the combustion chamber).
Might be painted. Might not. Stay tuned!

She sure has some gravity. Not really something I'll take camping, like the gas cylinder style aarkens.
If I need to move it around the yard, I think I'll just roll it.

Any idea what paint / coatings people are using on their aarkens?
I'm going to buff the rust off with a wire cup brush, then was thinking of hitting it with an oil or something to keep the rust at bay.
Can these be seasoned like a cast iron skillet somehow? ie rub them down with vegetable oil, penetrol, sump oil or something to give it a black oxide like finish?
I'm not too chuffed with the engine enamel that I used on the rocket stove I made. It didn't really hold up as well as I'd hoped, and it was supposedly good for 500Celsius.

There is pot belly black but most of that these days is just a high temp paint. Neighbours when I was a kid used to rub something into theirs with a cloth every week and kept it looking great, but no idea what it was.
Seasoning it like a cast iron pan will work but unless you do it every time you use it and keep it out of the weather, it will still rust.
The paints only seem good to 500 degrees max so thats welk below a dull red that I manage to get mine up to when it's really hammering, but would do for milder use I suppose

Looked up a SDS document on a 'POT BELLY BLACK' product. Seems like it's approx 75% turps, carbon black, and a few other 'non hazardous' ingredients.
Carbon black is a product of incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons, so would be present in used motor oil (along with a heap of heavy metals). Probably a moot point for a brake drum which was probably running asbestos liners for most of it's life!
I think any other oil based product which will deposit an amount of carbon into the steel pores would be a good bet. For the non-hazardous inclined, I think a veg based oil would be cheap and effective.

You could always go get it ceramic coated 🤪
