As someone married to someone of a non-white background who was born here (I wasn't) you don't necessarily appreciate the effect racism has until you see it in close quarters. I've seen my daughter shunned because of her dark tan and numerous actions towards my wife with completely different reactions to me.

In my experience the most racist people I've encountered have been middle aged men from the UK. I can say this without being racist as I was born there. That said racism cuts both ways and a lot of different cultures are racist to other races and it isn't just whites who are racist.

One of the upsets Clarkson has done in recent times is say the word ****** that was in a nursery rhyme . The thing is It was never said on air , It was said in a recording . But someone didn't like It ,so the **** hit the fan . So now we are told you can't use the N word , The thing is in lots of parts of the good old US of A . the African American's still call each other ****** , but that's OK because It's a black man calling a black man . Does anyone know what a person from Crete is know as ? , A Cretan , you got to love that . For me It's all down to the context of the way It's said . I get call a pommy bastard by my Ozie mates , I thought It is a compliment !!..Jim

Very true that. Racism is only funny until it happens to someone you know and love, then it's not funny at all - its vicious and nasty.
When we behave in a racist way what we're really saying is we think we are better than the person we are victimizing simply because they are a different race. That kind of arrogance is just plain stupid and wrong, I think. Telling people to 'harden up' doesn't solve the problem, it's just a poor excuse for bad behavior. Instead of telling victims of racism to 'harden up', what we should do is tell ourselves to 'smarten up'.

It's not a joke to the victims.
I believe Hitler used to make jokes about the clouds he saw being the Jews being blown away. Not funny at all.

i would hardly call killing people a light hearted joke.
    its all about context.

    for example:

Q: Why do Jewish men like to watch porno movies backward?
A: They like the part where the hooker gives the money back.

    is a light hearted joke.
