Not a fan of Prime minister Abbott, but the fact he is not going to Indonesia is fine by me. I'm sick of the way we bend over backwards to accomodate them and all we get in return is the finger!!!:mad:
On the other hand, drunken Australian tourists going over there and getting into trouble and thinking the Aussie Government can bail them out is an embarrassment to this country.:(

you pay their penalty and I am embarrased that we race over there and try and get them brought to Australia... stuff em.
If possessing 1gm is the death panalty over there and you have 1 gram...well seems straight forward...
(remember Barlow and Chambers? that slowed the drugs in for a bit Id reckon).
They have a sovereign right to enact whatever laws they like in their country, as we do in ours.
The Australians that die in Bali (1 every 9 days) arent all murdered...
there are driving accidents, drug taking (ODs), all sorts of bizarre stuff, allergic reactions, asthma that doesnt get treated fast enough...
so lets not jump to conclusions.... (you may fall and hurt yourself :) )
Oh and Bali is a predominantly catholic island... so maybe assuming that everyone is a muslim terrorist there, is wrong...
and we know what ASSUMING does,
it makes an arse out of you and ming...

besides everything else, people go over there treat locals as scum, act complete anchors (add your own W) and do things they wouldnt dream of doing in Australia.
We have also legislated to protect the lowest link... (which other threads here complain about!) In Indonesia there is a certain level of belief that if you die doing something blatantly stupid its because of that...you are stupid.
Lastly (on Bali) I went there once, its worth one visit, but that bamboo banging music drove me berzerk!
Do yourself a favour - Read Jason Macartneys book, even if you dont like AFL it is a fantastic read, he was a hero, running back into the burning restaurant to bring others out, and turning down his spot on a medivac plane to Darwin for someone else.
It follows through to his return game to AFL... it is brilliantly written and gives multiple views of those involved in the bombing attack.
Dont be hating on the indos too much...

One day Indonesia will run out of land and see a great big un-populated hunk of resource rich land just a short boat ride away. By then out friends the United States of Chinerica will be bankrupt and we will all get bali belli and a whack of the clap ;)
Sorry yall for my "glass is smashed on the floor" optimism - but our classic Australian apathy will be the hallmark of our downfall as a sovereign nation.

We are spending about 400 million of tax payers money a year on support/assistance to Indonesia. I don't think war coming to our shores is a concern.
This was the subject of another Thread, they have a massive standing army, but not all well equipped and it was also mentioned on the other Thread, they don't have the logistics to get an army over here. Indonesia might be a huge country population wise but they are a poor country.Quote:

In general, Indonesians do not hate Australians. They do not hate anyone, they are too busy getting on with their lives for that. The release of those convicted of being involved with that terrible attack in 2002 is part of the Indonesian judicial system, [ same as Corby was let out early] not some terrorist conspiracy. It may be hard for us to understand, but Indonesians probably don't understand how our judicial system allows child molesters & murderers to be released into the community , to strike again, [remember Daniel Morecombe, & Jill Meagher?] Don't forget, the Indons. have the death penalty, and indeed put some Bali bombers to death.
If Indonesian tourists came to the Gold Coast or Bondi and behaved the same way some Australians do in Bali, there would be an uproar. No one who lost some one in the bombing will ever forget, some will never forgive, and some of those released may still hold the views they had before release, in spite of being " rehabilitated". It can be guaranteed there will be a watching brief on them, and any others who may be on the radar.
Incidents around the World have shown how difficult it can be to keep a tight lid on terrorism, but I think it is wrong to point the finger at ordinary Indonesians, or, indeed, their government. And I say again, ordinary Indonesian people do not hate Australians, as long as we respect them & their customs. Bob

I've spent a lot of time across Indonesia and have been to Bali twice ... the first time I left on the Monday before the bombings :eek: it's not my idea of paradise but I certainly see the appeal as a holiday destination. The only reason so many Australians die / end up arrested there is because they end up doing something they shouldn't be. Let's face it, Westerners tend to make themselves easy targets for exploitation, usually through sheer ignorance.
However, if you follow the sort of life protocol you would follow at home - you know, the treat others as you would like to be treated, that sort of thing - then the likelihood of running into trouble is minimal. If you go with your head buried in the sand you probably deserve everything you get.
Does Indonesia hate Australia? That's debatable, but for the most part I would say no. The average Indo (in Bali particularly) realises that Australians visiting help them earn a living and appreciate that fact. Most Indonesians I've ever met in Indonesia dream of the day they an have enough money to go to Australia to see what the Western World is like first hand :)
