What vehicle for long distance remote travel?

Thanks mate, pretty aware of that. I have lived and worked in the central wheat belt, W.A. about 20 years ago so it wont be the first time I have had to get parts to a reasonably remote area. We would order our groceries then drive to town a few days later to pick them up, usually with parts for something.

I was there a couple of times in late 70s Toyota Corollas and once in a Subaru Brumby ute. The Brumby ute was the worst. I actually managed to order a crate motor from Perth and then another farmer in the district brought it out for me.

It was interesting the people I dealt with then were so much better than the people I have to deal with now. You couldn't afford to get the wrong part as was such an effort to get it. Now I go to a shop in Darwin and nobody really knows what they are talking about let alone get the part you need. It's just too easy for them to order another one. Maybe that would be a good thing with the 101. If you found someone to send you a part he would likely be a fanatic and get you what you need.

Actually, you're right about that. The worst thing these days is the can't-be-bothered people.

Come to think of it, you may have been spoiled, dealing with capable farmers! And I doubt the Wheatbelt has changed that much. On the other hand, Kimberley towns over this way are something else altogether.

I would say uncommon, rather than rare, and yes, good ones are a bit pricey, but no more that a decent older Defender. $20K to $30K will secure you a superb example that will handle anything you can throw at it. A lot for such an old vehicle, but the fun factor is off the scale. If you don't like being stared at everywhere you go, then a 101 is not for you. :)

What you need to do to it depends what you buy in the first place. I would (and have) driven mine thousands of KM on a trip as is - pretty much stock. Not done anything remote yet, but that's mainly due to the cost of the fuel, and me just not getting around to it yet. The Isuzu will fix that partly. The PO of my 101 has done the Simpson and other remote places in Aus with it, and never had an issue. They are very strong units.

I have tentative plans to tag along with some friends in 2 years time to go right to the top of FNQ, and also to do the Simpson with some others.

When I get my long service leave, me and SWMBO will head out in it for several months.:)

you said you have no budget......why are you thinking 15yo vehicles then?

if no budget I wouldn't hesitate getting a late D3 or D4

you can still get a nice powerful V8 in both models and fuel range problems are a thing of the past.

I don't think theres anywhere you can go now without getting fuel well inside your range , unless you tool around for hundreds of k's away from known roads.

if you plan , you will never have a fuel problem.

If budget isn't a concern, I'd also go late D3 or a D4 - but I'd only consider a Diesel.

Having previously owned a Rangie V8 and a D1 V8 - I wouldn't even consider any Landrover (petrol) V8 for remote touring if there's a diesel option available. A TDV8 rangie or sport - now that's another option alltogether. :D

If you're only considering a Landrover to get into a V8 - I'd be sticking with the Nissan.

A County 110 with 4BD1 and 5 speed o/d transmission. Nothing else compares for remote area travel. No electronics for a start. The o/d box really makes it as a long legged tourer. Fuel usage is 9 - 10 litres/100k's.

Budget no problems . Want comfort & off roadability & excelent on road . Why not an L322 TD6 / TDV8 :D:D:D

I had my D1 V8 Auto for about 13/14 years and towed a car trailer loaded quite often.
Did it well, and what I considered comfy and safe in all types of weather. Thirsty on fuel, about 350klm on average :(

My D2 V8 Auto, wow, like chalk and cheese.
Heaps more power, it had SLS and ACE and drove like it was on rails. Felt much safer, and very relaxing to drive. Fuel,,, heaps better than the D1. Usual to get 550+ around town, and 600 on the HWY.
