    I know it is pulling a very, very long bow, but one of my ancestors, I think is the word, was a Purdy, according to family legend, who served for a time in the US Navy, & then joined the US whaling fleet, to make his fortune. He jumped ship in Newcastle, & made his way to Rockhampton. Silly, I know, but the romantic in me would like to think the Purdy in this photo may be him. Bob

    Newcastle was a pretty rough place in the late 19th Century. Lot's of sailors did in fact jump ship there.
