Interesting hey, as in Tom Petries biography he chipped someone who used Mac-kay saying that John Mackay, an acquaintance of Toms & whom the city was named after, would be rolling in his grave at that usage. Also Johns descendants have gone on record that the correct pronunciation is Mac-eye. I know people in they're 60's born in the place who say Mac-eye. Maybe locals tell blow-ins it's Mac-kay as a joke, I don't just know!

A mate of mine , by the name of Karl linden, [ who had one of the first prawning licences in the gulf.] married a lovely girl from Mackay, born & bred, if I pronounced the name, Mackeye, she got up me. As far as she was concerned, it was Mac-kay. And woe & betide anyone who pronounced it wrong. Bob

Easy, Gundy. My dad managed a sheep station near Bungunya, , for a while. I went home on leave, bus to Toowoomba, train to Gundy, Toobeah, Bungunya. This train was straight out of the wild west, verandas on the carriages front & back, no station at Bungunya, just jump off . At Bungunya. there was a pub , a service station, & a few houses.


It was raining, had been for a while , no way could I get to the property at that time. Unbeknown to me, Dad had rung the publican, told him I was coming , the publican met me, took me in , fed me for four days, refused payment. A mad ringer came by, going to a property close to Dads, had a holden ute, the passenger door was held shut by a rope. We had a mad drive , a great time. Gundy. For those who live there. Bob

Off topic a bit but a bloke I know has a property on the Mac near Toobeah. Had a great bucks party there a few years ago for his wifes brother. Had to slip up to the rubbidy & get more supplies :D

The whole story of Edenglassie fascinates me, the typical gall of the Govt surveyor taking all the credit whereas Thomas Pamphlett and his party, in my books, should have their story told all over the place, they in fact guided the surveyors.
