I thought platipi were the only surviving monotreme, but alas.....

Australia is home to two of the five extant species of monotremes.

It's where John McDouall Stuart thought the middle of the continent was, but modern methods places it some 150km SW of that mountain. The first "centre of gravity" method used a map of Australia cut out of a sheet of metal and balanced!

I thought the centre was now just west of Finke where the replica of Parlament House flagpole is.

Ok a cryptic hint, of sorts. Named after a Scot, explorer, who when not out in the desert, was a chronic alcoholic, who died in England aged 50.
Actually the original name for Alice Springs is 'Mparntwe', an Arrente word. Been in use for many thousands of years before Stuart came along. Maybe the question should have been "what was the first white/Anglo/European name was Alice Springs given?"
