But unlike the Citroen, which was front wheel drive, with a four cylinder liquid cooled engine, the Tatra was rear wheel drive with an aircooled V-8 located in the rear.

The general design of the VW was copied from a late twenties Tatra that featured a backbone chassis, four cylinder horizontally opposed aircooled engine located behind the swing rear axles, torsion bar suspension, and similar styling. VW settled out of court with Tatra in the early fifties, legal action having been forbidden by the German Government when the VW first appeared in 1938. Porsche and the Tatra designer knew each other and discussed car designs on many occasions, apparently.

I'm not sure John but I think Porsche worked at or for Tatra pre WW ll.

In fact Tatra still make very good off-road trucks using these same principles. Aircooled diesel engine (up front) central tube backbone chassis and long travel torsion bar suspension.
Would love to own one of these Tatras for example.
