Tojos were used in the latter stages of the project.

( after the hard work was done!! )

Toyota sponsored the SMH scheme museum and apparently made it clear
they wanted the toyota photos etc featured...

They got a lot of what they wanted...but the truth is always there.
LAND ROVERS (and I hate to say it, their older cousin -JEEPS!) started
and did most of the project.

    yeah

haven't seen it in person yet so not fully assessed where i will head with it other than it has a front and rear pto as well and at worst it has quite a few bits i am looking at for my other projects..

time and how much rust i find in the chassis will tell the tale...

Yes, they did, for the simple reason that they could not buy Landrovers foir immediate delivery. As you may be aware, Landrover production was unable to meet demand until well into the seventies. As a result, each market was rationed, and at the time that Theiss was needing large numbers of vehicles, someone else had got in first with a large order that was going to take almost all the Australian quota for several years (think khaki).

So faced with no Landrovers Theiss looked at what else was available, and found the Landcruiser. The only other alternative would have been the Austin Gypsy, which was brand new, but unproven. Jeeps were from the dollar area and it is unlikely Theiss would have been able to get permission, and it is likely that delivery times would have been excessive as well.

I would be interested if anyone ever comes across my old SMHEA 86" hardtop. I don't have its chassis number, but the distinctive feature that is likely to remain with it was an oil pressure gauge that was flat with a vertical movement, and was screwed to the RH side of the instrument panel. When I traded it on my SMHEA Series 2, it had a home made tropical roof.
