Making a sand flag

I used a really long AM antenna and put a flag on top.

Dave_S used a (disposable) fishing rod.

How tall are they supposed to be ?
I was only going to use a piece of Orange plastic on the end of the (tapped) HF antenna.

Get one at the Birdsville Roadhouse, call for a price 07 4656 3226, they are orange conduit with a "Birdsville 4X4 Club" flag. You can tape it to the bull bar et cetera. Then you can pass it on or keep as a reminder of your trip.


Do you know anyone that may have a flag? They are not rare.

3m from the ground I think.

I made ours, old tent poles inserted into a section of vacuum cleaner extension that I had taped vertically to the bulbar. The poles were a bit wobbly, so I bought a 2m section of conduit to strengthen. Grand total of $4.

The flag was a section of rip stop nylon and the kids drew all over it to decorate it.

I think the flags have to be red or orange.

Basically how I made mine. And it collapses down to a manageable size.

$29 beach rod cable tied to the bullbar with a piece of orange material cable tied to the tip. :)
Have since caught fish with that same rod back on the coast.

Just back from crossing the Simpson. We had same issue. Used old aerial and a $1 orange flag from the trade desk at Bunnings and cable ties. The Desert pass book prescribes the height. Basically if it is 3.5 metres from the ground you will be ok.

There are minimum size requirements for the flag too - 300W x290H

20mm conduit inserted into 25mm conduit, (so it doesn't fold), or whatever size fits, depending on manufacturer, red/orange fabric on top and bobs your uncle.
