The odourants are very very concentrated for that very reason.
Not likely there was much gas in the house at all.
Lucky none the less...
got home tonight put key in front door opened door and Pong the smell of gas
.
Seems the gas hob on the stove was not completely turned off.
I later find out my son accidently knocked the gas knob whilst reach up to get something from the cupboard above the range hood he thought he had turned it off correctly.
I was only on for no more than an hour, I was suprised how quickly the entire house had gas in it, the gas buttom was just tad on.
Lucky no naked flames in the house.
You never can be too careful.

A friend has recently had her forgetful 85-yo mother move in and is worried about her turning on the gas stove and walking away without lighting it.
I've done it myself. I thought I'd lit the gas but hadn't. When I came back into the kitchen I could smell it.

There are gas detectors available which turn off the gas supply. No knowledge or experience with them however.
Our gas stove won't allow gas through the burner if there is no flame/heat, I thought most gas stoves had this feature, Regards Frank.
Same with mine. If there is no heat from the stove then the gas gets shut off. I have to hold the flame on for about 10secs before there is enough heat in the sensor to keep the gas flowing.

In the 1970's Brisbane Gas Co. went from coal gas to reformed petroleum gas (refinery waste) which is odourless. A drum of liquid stink on a manifold at the treatment plant would inject minute quantities of smell into the gas before reticulation. Someone pressed the wrong tit one day and emptied a couple of months of gas smell into the system in a few hours. The 'phones went crazy with reports of gas leaks as minute leaks became noticeable because of the high concentration of stink injected.
