Landy Head Job

Hi guys
I had a burst of inspiration today and got stuck into the leaky head gasket on the Landy.
It took me around 6 hours to strip it down, replace the lifters and head gasket and re-fit the head. All that is left to do is put a carby kit thru the carby and re-fit the manifolds and hoses. It was the first time I had got to use the air ratchet I bought recently, what a pleasure to use ,wish I got one years ago.
The engine was pretty clean inside,I only use LPG,was happy to see that the head has the hardened seats fitted as told by the previous owner. The pistons were all only 10thou oversize so hopefully she has many miles left.Couldnt find and evidence of the leak, exhaust into coolant only,no water in pistons, and no evidence of it 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

Is a good feeling when all the hard work comes to an end and you can sit back knowing the job is done well.

and being able to use the new TOYS is even better.
There are two types of people in this world, good and bad. The good sleep better, but the bad seem to enjoy the waking hours

Well done... a huge sense of satisfaction I imagine.

Being a real beginner it takes me about 6 hours just to change the oil
:!: :!: :!:

I look forward to the day when I can write a post like that.

I love getting in and getting my hands dirty, the disco's too reliable, I need to go get an old series to work on.
Doesn't it feel so satisfying to sit back and contemplate your hard work once finished?
Well done mate.

Hi Guys
Spent another 2 hours finishing it off this morning, went to start it and she wouldnt start Swithced it over to petrol, put a splash down the carb and away she went I must have done something right as it would never start from cold on petrol.Switched it back to gas and when the petrol ran out she died,I then found a wire I had dislodged on the LPG cutout,re-connected it and away she went.
All seems OK
A happy chappy

Hi Guys
It seems I didnt need to do the headgasket, there has been a development. All was OK after checking it whilst running on petrol,no more bubbles and water pouring out of the ratiator cap.
Imagine my disgust when the problem returned
Im thinking got to be a crack somewhere, really peed off.
I had a suspision of the LPG system so after work I gave a mate a lift home and we checked it out over a cool ale.Had it on gas, bubbling away happily forcing the water out, really annoyed.Next I turn the gas off at the tank,it idles away for a couple of minutes. When the LPG ran out I started it on petrol, once again it bubbled away, but it slowed, then almost to a stop after 5 mins or so.Then back to LPG,hello hello, lots of bubbles and the funny smell is back.OK repeat the process, after a while on petrol the bubbles almost stop.I know thing that the problem all along is the LPG converter is leaking LPG at tank pressure into the cooling system.
Unfortunately it wasnt running well enough to check it out properly on petrol previously ops: ops: ops: BUT AT LEAST I WONT HAVE TO PULL THE HAED OFF AGAIN.
And much experience was gained giving a holden 6 a head job.Still I just couldnt swallow

Have you tried putting some radiator stop leak in it, bars leaks etc, If it is only a hair line crack it might fix it. You can always put two cans in but no more.

Bit hard to give any mor help online need to see it. You can also do a head swap. Repco used to have reco heads.

If you want to see if it is coming from one cylinder. Take you car for a run, get it very hot and just take a spark plug out of N° 1 cyl and start the engine (the hotter the engine is the better). Do this with all six (not all at once) If you see that you pull out say N° 3 plug and the bubbles stop then you know where your head is cracked. You will not hurt the motor at all. If by chance you pull out N° 5 and the the bubbles slow down, then you have possibly two cracks.

Have you done a compression test?
