If the engine has been overhauled and the block deck skimmed, the engine no. will have been removed. The engine rebuilder may not have put the original no. back onto the block and a new no. may have been assigned by the authorities.
Hi there
I am hoping someone may be able to help me out with some information. I have purchased an unreg.P38 Range Rover from a seller Canberra . I Have all the papers right back to the original owner . I am now ready to put it on the road in Vic.
On checking the engine number has readable access for vicroads I have found it has a different engine number to the usual for a landrover 4.0L number instead of being 44xxxxxxA which is the number on all the papers for the vehicle from new.
The engine has a number with AAAS prefix then 5 digits a letter then another digit such as ( AAASxxxxxDx ) It is in the correct place near the dipstick between cylinders and clearIy stamped on the block.
I was wondering if this may be an allocated number from police or or maybe the RTA For a new engine without the number being stamped on it previously.
I am hoping one of the members may have been given an allocated number to stamp on an engine previously and may know what prefix or type of number is used and can help me out. Eagerly await to hear. Thanks and cheers
If the engine has been overhauled and the block deck skimmed, the engine no. will have been removed. The engine rebuilder may not have put the original no. back onto the block and a new no. may have been assigned by the authorities.

It may have been registered with the wrong number from new. That happened to me.
It seems the paperwork from the factory is often wrong. A whole batch of cars may be affected. Dealers are often correcting before sale.
But the dealers don't always check properly. I only found out when getting an engineering certificate.
From memory the worst were AMG, which gives Mercedes Benz some headaches. AMG are always pulling engines out to warm over, but don't marry up engine to donor when completing...whichever engine is ready gets fitted. It may be different now.

Hi Ron do you know how or what format the numbers are when they are assigned. Thanks
A lot of P38's suffered the shifting liner problem so i'm not surprised that it has had a new engine fitted. If you have the documentation then it should show who did the replacement.

Unfortunately no paperwork indicating an engine rework of any kind.
