    Forums are all the same: The written word. Sarcasm, rudeness, smart*****.

    Who polices this stuff? I mean, really? In the end you get the view that it's just some private club for 'some bloke and his mates'. (I'm not referring to the moderator here - I'm talking about members).

    Such is the nature of forums. I guess I am a luddite and I am just not 'into it'.
    As far as paying is concerned: Eventually it has to happen. Every business gets bigger. Bandwidth, computers and time all cost money. But everyone here should note: This is a business. It's not a club for a bunch of mates. It has got too big and needs to move on. Whether it succeeds in its direction or not is unknown. But in its current state, I will probably not pay to join it.
    Gee's mate .... It's a forum... There will always be personality conflicts. I personally couldn't give a hoot what anyone thought about me ... or about "winning online arguments" at all costs.

    A forum maybe run as a business.... But it's sure as hell not from a user perspective. A bunch of mates is exactly what it is. If we all decided not to login anymore .... Guess what, it'll cease to exist. It's the members that make a forum.

    The bit you have missed is no-one is *making* you pay. You can still use the forum without paying. I'd be happy to pay $11.00 a year. I spend a lot of time here reading and enjoying the forum. A good book can cost $45.00 and I've read it in a few days .... you can read here for a fraction of that... something new everyday.

    I wouldn't pay for the higher subscriptions, not because I don't think it's worth it ... But I simply have too many things to pay for now. I'm a member of two car clubs and there subscription costs. There's a limit to what I can spend on anything .... maybe in a few years things will be different, who knows.

    I've been using this forum for a couple of years now and whilst not a heavy user I do read the forum every couple of days. It wasn't until about a month a go that I subscribed after I thought about the value that I was getting from the forum (and wondering how Dave was funding it) that I realised the $27.50 for base subscription was a great bargain and would support the forum.

    1) I use the forum to help solve problems that I may have with my Disco. I don't necessarily rely on the forum 100% but it is a major source of information for me or helps me locate additional resources;
    2) I also get a good view of what problems others may have with their Land Rovers and from this I'm becoming more observant about mine;
    3) The forum is educational for me as it is easy to study. I don't have to bite off huge chunks of information at once. I can learn small pieces at a time. The tutorials are great and are still there the next day when I'd forgotten something. Often my laptop is in the front of the Land Rover as I fault find a problem;
    4) I also get different perspectives from folks on problems - eg how to fix a P gasket failure and what everyone views as the underlying cause. From this I can decide which action I will take to solve problems;
    5) You can PM folks who've had similar problems and learn the tricks first hand. This is invaluable;
    6) You get the honest opinion of folks from this forum which I respect. Sometimes in the auto industry some folks are trying to increase their sales by talking up problems and you end up parting with more $ than perhaps you would have if you'd gone somewhere else;
    7) Sense of community from the forum is great. You start to know the characters and respect them for who they are. I haven't been on any outings so I don't know folks personally but only through the forum.

    This is some of value that I get from the forum. The sum of the positives definitely outweigh any negatives (not that any come to mind). I don't have time to jump from forum to forum to solve a problem. If I had to recommend a forum to any LR owner it would be definitely this one.

    Dave, thank you for your work and considered thought in keeping the forum going. Great job!

    Hi All,
    So after having read this entire thread and apologies for putting it back on topic {Bob}. The root cause of the problem here, as in so many cases through out the world,is money right? Well how about a donations thread. Maybe a sticky in general forms? It may be set up so that lets say;- Tombie donates $500, he could get a post stating that in the sticky with a gold star or something, then people could go to the thread and add a thumbs up should they choose too? N.B-I'm not saying Tombie has or has to donate $500 it's just an example!!!

    Or perhaps members could request to be added to a donater's list that is PM'd when cash is required? Just a thought.

    At least this way those who can afford to give a little more will keep the cost down for those who can't and everybody will still have a choice. Personally I may not be on this site for weeks or months on end and if there was financial problems or any other sort of problems and Dave or the mods were asking for help, there is every chance I may not find out until it was too late .

    To Dave {Incisor}- I hope your health is improving, like so many, I had no idea.....

    regards Brian

    PS, before someone kicks off about it, I will be renewing my membership when I get to Brisbane next week, purely as I would like to visit Dave {Inc.} personally if it's possible...

    Some good positive suggestions Brian. For those of us that have been around here for quite a while, there have been similar ideas and fund raisers etc. done in the past. Often these where around times of significant expense, such as server upgrades etc.

    I'm guessing Dave is looking for something more systematic and on going that will help make the place more self sufficient.

    There are already different levels of subscription so that those that can and want to contribute more do.

    You have also given me another brilliant idea!.... Next time my sub is due... If I give it to Dave in person.... It gives me another excuse to head north. Do you think Mrs Bytemrk will buy that?

    For what it's worth i will definitely be subscribing.
    This forum has been the most valuable resource i have found for caring for my Landy. Well worth the price of the subscription Please take Note!

    If nothing else it may help weed out some of the users that dont contribute positively at all Please take Note!

    back when this place was running on a Pentium under Incs workbench,,,,

    we had raffles!(not auctions)
    members would just DONATE (new) stuff and we would raffle it for funds.
    lots of fun stuff,, people would actually bring items back from overseas for raffling. LR mugs. LR model cars,, what else Lou?

    and it worked.

    no reason it couldnt again.
