My Uncle who was a C of E Minister with a country parish in SW Vic told of a story that he picked up a hitchhiker/Swaggie one day during his travels around the Parish.

Not long after he had reason to help one of the CWA ladies with a Tea. As you do.

Suddenly he realised that the pong he had experienced was Vanilla Extract being drunk to get themselves ****ed.

No no no, not the CWA lady, the swaggie, although who can say what was drunk at CWA meetings?


Seems it was the custom at the time to sup Vanilla extract because they couldn't get the real McCoy.

Reminds me of the time I was on a geophysical field party and the crew chief woke up, somewhat belatedly, that the amount of vanilla essence on the supply orders vastly exceeded any possible cooking uses by the cook, who always seemed to have a pleasant smell!

Yes, you can't have methanol fuel in engines with magnesium castings. Must use ethanol.

Way back when I worked in ship repair I came across a Taiwanese 2nd. Engineer on a Norwegian cargo liner whose chosen tipple was Glenmorangie and orange juice. A Scots engineer would have chucked him overboard. Didn't faze the Norskers at all. Being Scandinavian they would drink anything.

I was once told that it was sacrilege to mix anything with Glenfiddich. So I bought a bottle of the stuff to see if it was something I could get to like.

About the only way that I could palate the stuff was mixed with methylated spirits (or kero, or mineral turps) with a bit of nugget thrown in for colour ................ :p

Agreed, Glenfiddich doesn't do much for me...for a cheap peaty-smokey one, I love Johnny Walker double black, not the black, the double black.

I got quite excited reading of the wee dram of kero, but a bit of a come down when you mentioned the glen fill diddly.
