Current Affairs Section Where Discussion About Contentious Topics Takes Place

I think its great if people can have an open discussion about issues and be mature enough to agree to disagree at times. Pickles and I are currently having a disagreement about something in one of the threads, but its all good humoured and no rockets are being fired. That's the way it should be.
Those that are not interested can simply ignore the whole thing, which is no different to any other thread or section. If it doesn't interest you, ignore it. Live and let live. This is supposed to be a free country, after all.

There is another thing called email. They could group mail or individually "debate" there enlightened thoughts and colleagues without insisting it be part of an unrelated forum or even start their own forum.

Hey Strangy, I reckon you may be missing the point here.

No one is expecting everyone to sign up - I won't be either.

What we have though, is an opportunity for those that want to have these robust conversations, to do so behind closed doors, away from those of us that don't.

As far as time, effort and subscription dollars - the mods that are looking after it are all volunteers and the amount of traffic in there is so minute compared to the rest of the site, that there is effectively no additional overhead at all....In other words no subscription money is needed to specifically to finance this anyway.

I see this as a win / win. Those that want to discuss issues that usually get out of hand in the general forum can..... and the rest of us don't even need to make an effort to ignore them!

It's a positive move whether you want to be in or out! ;)

Strangy, do you realise that your last post has most of the same characteristics as the posts in that new section? :p

Your post is not about Land Rovers. It isn't likely to change anyone's mind. You were expressing your opinion on a subject that is of no interest to a lot of members.

You may have even had a similar motivation to some of the people who debate those other subjects. You felt some sort of need to state your view on the subject.

I could have ignored your post just as you can ignore the new section. However, I chose to read it and felt it made a valuable contribution to the debate about the new section.

I happen to disagree with just about everything you said, but that doesn't mean that I wasn't interested in what you had to say. When people have a different opinion from mine, I am often interested to know why they hold the view that they do.

:p This thread is beginning to look more and more like I imagine that new section looks like. I can't be sure because i haven't been there yet. The two of us have differing opinions on something that some members would argue has nothing to do with Land Rovers.

You presumably had some reason to express your opinion and I felt some urge to respond. (Or perhaps it is just that I have a few minutes to fill in between a couple of jobs I had to do around the house and I have chosen to occupy myself with this post.)

Just my thoughts, my experience " discussing " topics with the old political thread usually ended up with those of a certain political persuasion shouting down all those who did not agree with them. It was almost like bullying , to be honest. There was no "mature" discussion, just one side trying to force their political beliefs on the other. I don't think we need a political discussion site on the forum. I have been set upon by philistines because of my posts in the past. But my posts have been , in the main, positive. And, in some cases , informative, I honestly can not say that about the political threads here in the past. I can not agree with those who say it is a mature discussion, on AULRO. If it is , why does it have to be hidden. Go to a political forum , take you belief their. Just my thoughts, and no, I refuse to debate bigots. Bob

What I can say is that the new forum is different to the old one, members express their opinions on policies or topics of interest without any confrontation.
Perhaps it is because some of the members that were unable to exchange opinions or experiences are not there?
Members ask why the other member have a view in something, the view is explained explained why and that it is the end of the matter. It helps to understand the other person to be able to debate in a constructive manner.
There is not any passionate and defensive position about any political party by the members there.
