And by the same token, don't buy a new car & wheel it straight into a Concours event - like a few Jaguar owners do at a certain show I frequent.

Very Very true..I aim to restore it to orginal factory spec..
There is a restored Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 that is entered in the RACQ Motorfest...
It has won a few awards;)
I don't really want to win that badly..just want to get the LJ81 up to that standard or close to:cool:
best thing yopu can do is pay attention to every detail you can find, things like door gaps make sure there all even and uniform, check for overspray behind guard lips and inside door jambs. If you looking to enter into an original or unmodified class don't be tempted to fill spot welds and factory seams.
During the early eighties cars in the club I was part of (Generals), would win awards over others because they actually looked original, "Original" means being as close to as it came from the factory but "fine tuning" the overall fit and finish so it kinda catches your eye when you walk past it but you can't quite work out why.... that's what keeps people and judges looking over you car more than others........... IMO
