Land Rover vs Ford Transit

I've had a dig around US Ebay looking at NAS Defenders. They start around $US25k and generally have some issues.
Here's a clean looking one for $US37k (reserve not met): Land Rover Defender 2dr Convertible | eBay

The often quoted $US100k is the occasional custom build bollocks. No-one knows if they actually sell.
Here's one for $US50k with no bids: Land Rover Defender D90 | eBay

The retarded prices are due to the scarcity. If they sold plenty of them the second hand prices would be closer to that in the UK.

Yes they would but they are in an similar but worse situation to Australia and U.S muscle cars, we need to pay to import them , then convert them to RHD. In the U.S they not only need to import them, convert(most of) them from RHD to LHD , older than 25 years, but also ensure they are original spec, so a 88 110 cannot have a tdci 6spd and flashy dash. this means they often bring them in with one engine/interior then after getting imported fit another, further raising costs.

Neither the Transit nor the Defender are performance vehicles, but I'm not sure which would be scarier when pushed to speed:

If Land Rover built the defender with a 4ltre diesel engine with running gear to match,front and rear lockers and portal diffs all round,LR fuel tanks,suspension from a Baja buggy blah blah blah all the knockers would rejoice and praise the Lord,trouble is they would then see the $100,000 price tag and buy a $50,000 Ranger instead.Thems are the facts. Allisport InterCooler ( Could all the performance differences with the transit come from one component like this)
Silicon hoses
EGT gauge
ECU from ??? maybe BOR
Exhaust upgrade from BOR
Probably not a turbo, from what i read they really only help top end

and Ashcrofts LSD diffs and transfer case and the adapter shaft thingy

Looking for a comfortable tourer with a bit more grunt up the dunes,

What have i missed.
Are axle shafts still dodgy or finally sorted

Exactly Pat. It's the straightforward, not over-blown, economy of the Defender that has always been its strength. (I am surprised that the 2.2 isn't more economical than a 300 Tdi, but it's still more economical in the real world than a 6 or V8). Heavy Duty practicality and capability outweighs straight performance in my book. This unfortunately is the trade-off that risks being lost with a fast light all aluminium new 'defender icon'. My Defender out performs any V8 or six cylinder 70 series for example, in terms of fuel economy, off road ability and on road comfort. And it doesn't make me feel more of a man to drag someone off at the lights either, so it's a no-brainer. All the dual cab Utes use a bit less fuel and drive more like a car, but that's the trade-off I don't want, because they're compromised in every other way, as are bigger engined faster Discoveries, etc in terms of hose-out-ability and price. ...The heavy duty constant 4WD and transfer case easily outweighs a little more punch from the engine for me. And if that makes the engine and drive train more durable and under less stress throughout, all the better too.

All lr had to do was take the td5 out to 3ltr, common rail it and build the driveline to handle it properly. A defy doesnt need a 4ltr but a 2.7 or 3.0ltr V6 would be nice.

Or take the Tdi out to 3.0ltre,VNT with common rail and not have the Td5,the Tdi could have more bottom end because of it's longer stroke. Pat
