Vehicle Weights

Here's a tip:

If you don't need to front axle/ rar axle weight broken up, but are just after the overall vehicle weight you can save money on weighbridges.

My local council tip (sorry, waste recycling and disposal centre) has a weighbridge for weighing commercial waste vehicles in and out (they get charged on this basis).

So just head up there and whack your vehicle on it (it just weighs as you drive onto it). Now go and buy some beer (or petrol if you have a Rangie) with the money you just saved. [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif[/img]


I know that my Ute (empty; with driver and bullbar) weighs approx 1.5 ton (tonne?) - it's been awhile since I've been to the tip so I can't remember the exact weight.

The other thing to bear in mind is that you can beef up your suspension but uless you get the GVW updated on your VIN plate you're still limited to the plated weight.

My 110 has the same setup as the 130 (i.e. HD Springs & helpers). As it was fitted by LandRover SVO they updated the VIN to show that the GVW is now 3499kg rather than the original 2995kg. Mind you, it needs it as the Camel (EMPTY) weighs in at 2600kg!!!

When it comes to the equipment that you're carrying, you need to take a long hard look and cut things down to the minimum. Someone mentioned going camping with a rucksack before you go camping with a car... I completely agree. I do a lot of mountaineering, climbing, walking, etc.. & that teaches you to go lightweight as if you want it, you've got to carry it!

Family... Children... That's just an excuse for being lazy! I'm doing my 18mth trip, in a 110, with 2x young kids currently 2 & 4) & the missus.... That's also with a minimal amount of kit on the roof!!! (for the record - Chairs, jerry cans & skis!). The weight will be under the GVW and I can take all the kit I need WITHOUT needing a trailer.

I don't know if you can get it over in Oz but there's a GREAT book about all of this - Vehicle Dependant Expedition Guide by Tom Shepherd (a Desert Winds publication in conjunction with Land Rover).

That's right, it's the placard that makes the difference.

The Camel Landy weighs more than stock but a stocker would weigh a lot more by the time it's even close to Camel spec.

Agree re what you need vs want (it was me that made that comment). When we did the Simpson the only thing on the roofrack was the second spare tyre. Everything else fitted inside. And we were set for 12 days or so without resupply, so that would have more than worked for a round-Aus trip. We have a family of 3. A 2nd kid would have fitted in too.

It's in situations like this where you have a lot of gear to carry over rough terrain that the Defender begins to look more and more attractive compared to the sleeker city models with rounded curves and plusher interiors.

I got my defender weighed today at work as we had a set of truck scales available (same as those the mermaids use accurate to +/- 10kg)

I've got ARB Deluxe Bar with warn 8000lb high mount, driving lights, Kaymar rear wheel carrier, dual optimas, twine shower, toolbox, bluetongue compressor, plywood drawer in the rear and the R&R Beadbreaker was on board with 3/4 tank fuel.

Weights went as follows:-

Front right 570kg
Front left 590kg
Rear right 510kg
Rear left 550kg

The GVM of the vehicle is 3050 so I've got around 830kg to play with but the front axle loading is 1200kg. Our engineer said the rough rule of thumb would be that 30% of any extra load would be carried by the front axle with the remaining 70% on the rear.

This would give front axle of around 1390kg and rear around 1650 for the GVM of ~3050.

So while technically overloaded on the front axle probably not too bad. My normal camping trips up to now have been with the wife and 3 kids so we end up pretty well loaded.

Tare weight was 1900kg with the V8 according to the VIN plate

Please clear something up for me, as far as I know GCM is gross combination mass which means with a trailer, and on my disco it is 6220 kg, thats a hell of a lot of weight. This is what QLD Transport have said is legal. Is this correct 8O

That sounds about right:

3500 kg for the trailer (Discos rate highly)

1920 tare + 800= 2720 kg GVM

Check your GVM on the rego papers.
