I'm with Ramblingboy here. Before leaving I study google maps, print out a couple of necessary pages and I carry a street directory in my car.
If you travel from Melb to my place a satnav will unnecessarily send you about 5 kays along a dirt road with some bits a goat track.
50 metres from my place is an intersection. Over the other side of this the road is often incorrectly named by a lot of these machines.
If I want to go to "Crash's" place from mine I type in his address and it directs me there along a dirt road, when it can be done on bitumen with no further distance.
Now dirt does not worry me in the disco, but Crash's next door neighbor drives an SS Commodore and he does not want to drive on dirt.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

I just purchased a 10" tablet for GPS/Mapping(plus internet use when travelling). Was MUCH cheaper and is better than the factory alternative.I have a mount so it wont be an issue.
I can legaly make phonecalls thru the steering wheel and dash touchscreen without touching the mobile phone

Here's another dumb rule for phones in Vic. If you safely and legally pull off the road and park to use the phone, you must turn off engine. If the engine is running it is classed as the same as driving and you can be booked.

I was leaving a harbour at 0200 once through a complicated reef system, had two experienced mariners on board, one professional, one self taught.
The first one gave me Lot of bearings and distances, the second one said aim for that coconut tree, and now head for Venus, him I understood.![]()
By all means get a Defender. If you get a good one, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.

i think that one is in all the states.
i remember once we were hanging out in vic and some $%#head cop come over.
one of the the girls was sitting in the passenger seat playing on her phone. engine off but radio on.
the cop asks her for her licence. she replies shes 15 so doesnt have one.
cop states that keys are in ignition, shes the only one in the car, therefore shes driving without a licence and driving while using a mobile phone.
common sense prevailed and the magistrate threw it out of court but at the time it was the stupidest thing i had seen a cop do.
I think some people take the whole GPS thing too far, they think that the electronic voice commands are gospel, how else do you explain these morons that cut across 3 lanes traffic at the last second because they missed there turn and the machine said turn right, turn right.
I think these machines need a feature that plans ahead and says "hey moron, get in the right lane, you going to be doing a right hand turn soon, start preparing"
Yep I have had my GPS try a short cut when the shortest route was selected, I didn't have a key or bolt cutters for the locked fire access road it tried to send me down.
The other thing I hate it will try to take you via Toll road, even when the non toll road is closer and quicker. So i have deselected use toll roads
