Given this argument is going around in circles. If cyclists over the age of 16 were made to have a visible form of identification and pay an annual fee, what would all the haters start complaining about next? From what i understand once a hater of cyclist always a hater no matter what happens.

Have to agree with this . I guess as they are not a racial or religious minority , the cyclists become a great scapegoat for whatever is really stuck up the rectums of the complainants. There seems to be little hatred eminating from our overseas bretheran. Perhaps once this tea cup storm has abated , a book can be openned as to what group is next . For myself , the nominations are mobility scooters , be it footpaths roadways or barging through the super market. May try funeral processions or army convoys ? Get a life the road is there to be shared and driving is a priviledge not a right.

Yeah, but my point was that vehicle weight (or even better, axle weight) is a more relevant measure of wear and tear on infrastructure and therefore a more logical way of calculating registration costs.

Yappy rat dogs get my vote for a 235/85 adjustment.
By all means get a Defender. If you get a good one, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.

This was from the West Australian

How rude of the cyclists to not only buy a coffee or water but have the nerve to sit there and drink it without offering the (most likely car driver) their seat. See cyclist are such a bunch of rude arrogant people.

Being sarcastic I know, but who is it that actually has the bad attitude?

I keep reading through this thread and wondering. We have cyclists from other countries who are surprised at how motorists treat cyclists in Australia but is that because Aussie motorists are selfish dim-witted morons? Or could it be that the habits of Aussie cyclists rub motorists up the wrong way and the visiting riders are simply seeing the result of many years of pent up anger?

The popular opinion seems to be that Aussie motorists need to be reprogrammed but perhaps the standard of the average Aussie cyclist is sub-par (compared to other countries) and any improvement in the current situation needs to begin with them?

I was involved in an accident many years back with a courier cyclist on St Georges Terrace in Perth.

I was turning right off the terrace, across the oncoming traffic, and as I crossed the road and entered the side street I heard "oh ****", as a cyclist slammed into the front left fender of my car, and went over the bonnet. I immediately stopped to render assistance....I was stunned! I wondered where the hell he came from.

A bystander who witnessed the event yelled out "grab his rego before he ****es off"...I gave the ****** a mouthful as I was on the ground helping the cyclist, obviously the dumb ***** was blind.

The cyclist was not visible to me as he hurtled down the terrace, and there were no other cars oncoming.

I thought about it after the event, and still could not picture him coming down the terrace.

The environment at the time was reasonable dark from shadows, he had dark clothes on.....and I was sober.

I spoke to the cyclist that night and he apologised for what happened. He told me he was in a hurry and not concentrating at all on his surroundings. I was apologetic too as I never even saw him coming down the terrace.

I do come across a big number of "gaggle" of riders on Saturday mornings, riding more than 2 abreast......I give them one hell of a blow on the horn to warn them. They quickly move over as they realise they are in the wrong. I record their actions for my own protection.

I ride too, but feel it is a dangerous place to ride on major arterial routes when there are so many distractions for drivers these days.

    Brett.....

No kidding. You don't seem to have grasped that most cyclists understand this and you're just flogging the same dead horse you've been dragging around behind you for months. Cyclists are exactly the same as other people and don't magically become any less or more stupid than the regular people they are the rest of the time.
