That was kind of my point trog, this is the first vehicle I have ever owned with a reversing camera.

Walking around the vehicle is great in theory.... but can you honestly say that you do it every single time? Particularly when very busy.

And as Jon said, they have a habit of moving anyway.

Obviously as the driver responsible for the vehicle it would have been my fault... but given exactly the same circumstances, but put me in my D2a rather than the D4, I think there is a good chance I would have hit her.

So glad that did not happen.

I wouldn't be without mine and I was rather disgusted a couple of months ago to see a new Merc on display with a list of options that could be added that included a reversing camera.

I have a camera on one vehicle, and to be honest, most of the time, I've turned the car on and reversed as far as I need and back into drive before the camera even kicks in.
It's a beautiful combination of routine and slow arse electronics.
And then there is the angle of most screens, impossible to see with the slightest amount of sun.
Great in theory, but, for me, only good for really tight parking spots, and backing back past the 'red section'.

In reality it was the reversing sensors that saved this situation.

It was those going off that made me wait and triple check the camera. If I had no camera but still had the sensors I would have still got out to check.

Trundle... the D4 camera seems pretty good still in the sun... or maybe I've just been lucky.

I've never had a vehicle with a reversing camera, and the D4 is the first I've had with reversing sensors / beepers. I used to believe that they were all just another sales gimmick ............ but I've now come to rely on the sensors in the D4 a lot.

I think the closest I've ever come to bowling a little old lady with a shopping trolley over in a car park was in my old F100. Particularly with the canopy on that thing, you had very little (about zero) view of anyone close to the rear of the vehicle unless they were quite tall. The throaty rumble of the exhausts used to keep most people away from the back of it - but not always. ;)

I have fitted a reversing beeper to my canvas top series 2a for just that reason,as it has full canvas sides so the only vision to the rear is via the 2 external mirrors and the interior one,I will be fitting one to the D1 shortly as well,as in the area that we live and shop has a LARGE geriatric population and 2 nursing homes,many of those drive/aim there electric chairs at any clear space :(
