    Tourist in Ballaraat

We are spending 5days in ,around Ballaraat, whilst our daughter competes in National cycling at Buninyong. As she only has 2races, days apart, what will keep an old codger bright eyed, and bushy tailed in the interim?

Depends what you're into. There are a lot of pubs in Ballarat, and you can walk around a surprising amount in one day if you want....

The main attraction at Ballarat is Sovereign Hill - sovereignhill | Family Tourist Attraction, Goldrush. To fully take in, you will loose at least a full day, and you can easily spend 2 days there to fully get around it. There is live steam there, with the boilers and associated equipment running every day of the year. Steam runs various items around the place including a large beam pump which pumps water from the mine. (Well, some of it at least - an electric pump does the lions share, but the beam pump is nicer to look at )

The evening sound and light show 'Blood on the Southern Cross' is very good. The Gold museum across the road from there is also worth a look, and has some interesting exhibits - not just about gold, but also a lot of local history as well.

If you're down at Bunningyong, the Bakery does some nice food - both savoury and sweet.

There are a lot of old and historic buildings to see if that's your cup of tea.

Our Daughter lives there and we often enjoy a day just wandering around when we get a chance.

Visit Clunes, Creswick, Maryborough, Castlemaine, but perhaps do Maldon first, as the whole town is National Trust classified. There is also a VERY good Steam Tourist railway there.
All these are in the "Golden Triangle", historical gold mining area, and beautiful country.

Another vote here for Sovereign Hill and the Gold Museum. Can easily spend a full day or more between these two.

Eureka Stockade is also worth a look.

Wouldn't waste money on Kryall Castle though - kiddies entertainment only and nowhere near as good as what it used to be years ago.

I could spend weeks around the area Ballarat / Bendigo and places between.
    Cheers .........
