Getting ripped of on exchange rate when buying overseas

Number 2 son purchased a Soccer Shirt from the UK online and paid via his credit card just on christmas. His credit card got debited and it was in GBP which was $127 Aussie dollars. Then after christmas he gets an email to say they have no stock available so offer him a refund. So number 2 takes the refund, but instead of getting his $127AUD back he only gets $120 back as the AUD has fallen against the GBP. So thanks for nothing he is $7 worse off and still didn't get what he orginaly paid for. It's not much, but it does smell a bit though. The pommy retailer made $7 for nothing

The pommy retailer made nothing. Your son ordered a shirt for ?69 or $127 at that day's exchange rate. Then nil stock so your sons card was credited ?69. Unfortunately the exchange rate wasn't good that day. I'd say the credit card company won. Was it an Aussie Bank?

But then today I wanted to order a bowstring and a couple of small items from a WA archery store. Total goods worth $22. They wanted $29 std Aust Post from Perth. I got the same items from the USA delivered for $31.
    So, who's ripping off who?

I won with exchange rate fluctuations when early in December I paid for e-diff oil that for some reason was returned to the supplier without leaving the UK and credited 2 weeks after purchase.

I guess with exchange rates, there are swings and roundabouts. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.

Yes, true, lucky it was only a small amount, but if it was a purchase of say $1000.00 and you lost $100's because a seller was selling stuff they did not have in stock and you got a refund, I reckon one would be pretty peeved.
