Our local hardware store is REAL old school. Been much the same for a very long time. Only smallish in size, but has at least most of what you would want. Service is second to none. I have a account there, where I can by on impulse and pay of later :(:D problem is the boss also uses the account. If you don`t need it straight away and the don`t have it they will get it in for you even if they don`t normally stock it. Sure beats Bunnings or the like.
