Customs apprehends gun-toting armadillo

So often people ask me what soirt of things we get up to at our job.

Well, among other things, we do our best to stop gun-toting armadillos from entering the country.

    <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>Wednesday, 22nd September 2004

Customs officers have seized a unique item of wildlife which breaches both the laws of good taste and international wildlife protection.

While screening international air cargo in Sydney recently, Customs officers found the unique item in a package from Texas, USA and destined for an Adelaide address.

The stuffed armadillo was complete with toy pistols, cowboy hat and sheriff's badge.

While bad taste should have been enough of a reason not to attempt to bring the armadillo into the country, it is also illegal to import the item without a permit.

Customs Regional Director for South Australia, Virginia Lynch, said, "Armadillos are a protected species listed under the Convention for the International Trade of Endangered Species (CITES). Australia supports the convention".

CITES protects over 30,000 species of animals and plants worldwide.

In this case the item was being imported as a gift. Customs seized the armadillo and issued a warning to the addressee.

However fines of up to $110,000 and/or 5 years imprisonment for individuals may be imposed for commercial importations.

The import and export of wildlife into and out of Australia is regulated under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.
I'll sleep easier tonight knowing that the "laws of good taste" are being controlled at the borders.

You can't have that being brought in.

But how come all that rococo Italian furniture is available?

    Not to mention Lexus

Did anyone bother to check whether the Trojan armadillo was stuffed with bags of cocaine?

Every time they tried to give him a cavity search he fired off a few rounds. It was deemed unsafe OI. Matt

You don't really think the fire at Brescia Furniture in Sydney was accidental? It had to be stopped somehow.

    D'Oh :!:

When it arrived there was a mad priest telling us not to bring it inside the country and a priestess predicting the downfall of civilisation, but why on earth would anyone take them seriously :?:
