I reckon you've nailed it Mick.
What an amazing thread, probably should be in the sealed section. ;).
Why Australia has scrapped the F 111's, especially the G's which we bought at a give away price has got me stuffed. Cruise missiles may have made them obsolete but hey !, we don't have any do we ?
As for the F35, a designed by committee one plane does all 'dream' that will never amount to anything but a 'does every thing badly and nothing well disaster . If you want a night fighter, buy a night fighter, if you want a bomber, buy a bomber etc, but hey......................what would I know ? There's a **** load of experts out there that reckon turning lead to gold is all the go................. sigh.
Have a happy day :D:D:D
Deano :)
:D:D:D Even the Yanks don't really go for the 1 plane to do all bit that's why they have the f22 as well as the f35, there is no replacement for the f111 probably never will be it was a one off that got it right almost from the start and we do have cruise missiles

but we don't talk about them it might upset the neighbours:angel:
yes it was.
we adapted it to a multi role attack interceptor type aeroplane.
I don't know what the RAAF officially described it as.
I can remember vividly on patrol in a major exercise when one came over a small rise using its terrain hugging capability and slipped down the the other side directly towards us and took our photo....it would have been barely 100' above the ground and probably doing 500mph.....we had no idea it was coming ....it was still "silent" when we saw it , then got hammered by its noise.
oh yes... we were all wiped out by 'cluster bombs'.....I think it was. That was good cause we went non tac for a couple of days until we were reborn by the umpires.
wish I could have photograped it.
nice to read a bit of non armchair stuff.
the f22 f35 etc, in fact all of them can do the same. the f111 may have gotten there a bit more quickly but with today's defensive systems it is doubtful it would get there at all. the f22 f35 are heavily biased towards getting there.
The F111 was a very good aircraft, best of its class, but towards the end out of all the aircraft at Amberley, you would be lucky to find two on line, if lucky. The rest were down for maintenance , that is why they had to be replaced. My mate was involved with the job. Bob
